CERTIFICATE IN POLICING COURSE 
REGULATIONS

LEGAL NOTICE 97 of 1998.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Certificate in
Policing Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies established
under regulation 3;
"the Certificate" means the Certificate in Policing; and
"the course" means the course leading to the Certificate in
Policing.
Applicability.
commencing in 1998 or later.
Board of Studies.
appointed by the Senate on the recommendation of the Board of the
Institute of Forensic Studies. It shall consist of a Chairman, a
Course co-ordinator and six members. Other members may be co-
opted by the Board if the need arises.
(2) The Board of Studies shall advise the University
Admissions Board on the admission of students and shall make
recommendations to Senate on the academic programme and on
matters relating to the proper running of the course.
Eligibility for the 
Certificate.
4. To be eligible for the award of the Certificate, a student
shall have:
( a ) registered for and successfully completed the course as
provided in these regulations; 
( b ) completed the appropriate study programme, qualified
in the final examinations and satisfied any other
requirements prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) complied with any other requirements prescribed in
any other relevant statutes and regulations of the
University.
Requirements for 
admission.
5. Students shall be nominated by the Commissioner of Police
and may be registered for the course in terms of the Admission
Regulations if they satisfy the following requirements
( a ) possess the General Entry Requirements for
registration as regular students, as stipulated in the
Admission Regulations of the University; or
( b ) are members of the Malta Police Force holding an

appointment of Sergeant or higher and who are able to
demonstrate to the Board of Studies that they are
academically able to follow the course with profit.
Course duration. 6. The Course shall consist of two semesters of full-time
study.
Course 
programme.
7. (1) The course shall consist of study-units, to which not
less than twenty-one (21) credits shall be assigned, in areas of
studies directly related to police work and to studies supportive to
policing.
(2) A catalogue of study-units, indicating the credits assigned
to each, and which study-units are compulsory, shall be published
at the commencement of the course.
(3) Study-units may include lectures, seminars, tutorials,
practicals, projects, site visits or combinations thereof as
appropriate.
(4) Each study-unit may be assessed by coursework, written or
oral tests or a combination of these as appropriate and as
determined by the Board of Studies.
Assessment. 8. (1) Results shall be published according to the following
grades, in descending order of merit: A, B, C and D. F indicates
Fail, I indicates Incomplete.
(2) Students who fail in the assessment of a study-unit shall be
allowed a reassessment once only. If successful, the maximum
grade that may be awarded shall be grade D. In the case of failure
students shall be considered to have definitely failed the study-unit.
Final 
examinations.
9. (1) The final comprehensive examinations shall consist of
two (2) written papers and shall be held at the end of the course.
Only students who have obtained a minimum of twenty-one (21)
credits shall be allowed to sit for the final examinations.
(2) Students who fail in any of the examination papers shall be
allowed to re-sit the failed paper/s once within a period of not more
than six (6) months from the date of the publication of results. The
maximum grade that may be awarded after such a supplementary
session shall be grade D. Students who fail in the re-sit shall be
considered to have failed the Course.
Results. 10. (1) The final classification of students shall be based on
the assessment of the study-units (including practicals) and the
final examinations according to the following weighting:
Study-units (excluding practicals) 50%
Practical study-units 10%
Final Examinations 40%.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
Certificate shall be published in alphabetical order in the following
categories:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
