DIPLOMA IN LABOUR STUDIES REGULATIONS

The title of these regulations is the Diploma in Labour
Studies Regulations, and these regulations shall apply to the
courses starting in October 1994 or later.
Registration.
for the Diploma in Labour Studies:
either ( a ) as a regular student of the University
or ( b ) as a probationary student in terms of regulation 3
of the Admission Regulations of the University.
1.1.1 A candidate who is registered as a probationary student
will become eligible for registration as a regular student of the
University on the successful completion of the study-units in Basic
Disciplines (Level 1) as indicated in regulation 2.5 hereunder.
1.2 A candidate who applies for registration may be required to
attend an interview conducted by the Department of Public Policy
during which the existence of the aptitudes for Labour Studies will
be assessed.
Course of studies.
consists of:
( a ) Study-units for which not less than 20 credits are
assigned,
( b ) Dissertation, and
( c ) Final Examinations.
2.2 The course is only offered on a part-time basis.
2.3 A catalogue of study-units, with the credits assigned to
each unit, will be published before the start of each semester.
2.4 Some study-units may be indicated as optional.

2.5 (i) The course shall include:
( a ) a Basic programme (Level 1) with study units in:
Economics
Sociology
Psychology
Political Science
( b ) a Core programme (Level 2) with study units in the
theory and practice of industrial relations; and
( c ) a programme of optional study units (Level 3) in
policy issues and skills.

(ii) The study units of the Diploma Course shall be
specified by the Faculty Board before the start of each course.
2.6 Some study units may also involve guided field work.
Candidates may be required to submit written reports on their field
work and this will be considered as an essential component of the
course for which credits are assigned.
2.7 In each semester of the course, candidates will be assessed
in the study-units covered during that semester in accordance with
the criteria established by the Faculty Board.
2.8 A student who fails in any study-unit may be allowed to
repeat the assessment procedure of that study-unit, or to repeat the
entire study-unit. A student may only be allowed to repeat once
each of the study units. In each of these cases the maximum grade a
student can obtain is a ‘Pass’.

2.9 The study-units shall be arranged so that a course of
studies can be completed within a minimum period of two
semesters and a maximum of four semesters of full-time studies or
their equivalent in part-time study.
2.9.1 In extraordinary circumstances, provided that due warning
has been given, the Co-ordinator of the Diploma course may
recommend to the Faculty Board the termination of a student’s
status if, on the basis of reports given by the lecturers involved, the
co-ordinator is not satisfied that the student is making the expected
progress.
Dissertation. 3.1 Each candidate will be required to write a dissertation of
approximately 10,000 words in an approved area of study.
3.2 The dissertation must be submitted for examination two
calendar months prior to the end of the Final Examinations.
3.3 The dissertation must adhere to the criteria established by
the Faculty Board.
Final 
Examinations.
4.1 Final, written, comprehensive examinations will be held at
the end of the course. Only candidates who have obtained at least
20 credits will be admitted to the examinations.
4.2 The final grade (Distinction, Merit; Pass, Fail) will be
based on course work, dissertation, and Final Examinations in the
following proportions: Course work 40%; Dissertation 20%; Final
Examinations 40%. A candidate will not be awarded the Diploma
unless he obtains a Pass in each of the Course work, Dissertation
and Final Examinations.
4.3 Candidates may also be required to sit for a viva-voce
examination.
Eligibility. 5.1 To be eligible for the award of the Diploma in Labour
Studies a candidate must have:
( a ) completed the appropriate studies (course work and
dissertation) in Labour Studies; and
( b ) passed all the prescribed examinations; and
( c ) completed all the requirements laid in these
regulations.
