BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF 
PHILOSOPHY - M.PHIL. - IN THE CENTRE FOR 
COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

LEGAL NOTICE 150 of 1998.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - in the Centre for
Communication Technology.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Centre for Communication
Technology;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Master of
Philosophy - M.Phil. - in Communication Studies;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Philosophy -
M.Phil.
Applicability.
Registration.
who have obtained a first degree, normally not below second class
Honours level, either in -
( a ) Communication Studies, and/or Instructional
Technology; or
( b ) any other area of studies approved by the Board.
(2) Candidates accepted under ( a ) or ( b ) above may be
required by the Board to satisfy additional prerequisites, including
the requirement to follow a preparatory programme of studies and
pass a qualifying examination, before they are admitted to the
programme.
Dissertation format 
and presentation.
4. (1) The application for registration shall include the title of
the proposed dissertation and a brief summary of its objectives,
methodological design, importance of likely results and a time
scale for likely implementation as well as a recommendation by a
member of the academic staff who is ready to act as supervisor.
(2) The length of the dissertation shall not exceed 50,000
words unless otherwise specified by the Board.
(3) A student shall be required to submit three copies of the
dissertation for examination which shall be adequately bound. The
student shall submit within three months of passing the
examination of the dissertation, two final copies of the dissertation
one of which shall be deposited at the University Library or the
Audio-Visual Library of the Centre.

(4) The final copy shall conform to the following
specifications where applicable:
( a ) presentation format of the thesis shall be -
(i) with cloth bound preferably black with stiff
boards and good quality acid-free paper;
(ii) with lettering in gold on the front cover showing
the full title of the dissertation at the top and the
name of the candidate with the year of
submission at the bottom of the cover;
(iii) with lettering in gold on the spine showing the
title, short title where applicable, and the name
of the candidate;
(iv) with a first page, identical to the front cover of
the dissertation, following a blank sheet;
(v) with a second page bearing the title of the
dissertation at the top, the printed names and
original signatures of the supervisor and
chairman of the oral examination, and date of
final presentation following after the title page;
(vi) with an abstract of not more than 300 words
following after the page bearing the signatures
of the supervisor and chairman;
( b ) maps, diagrams, graphs, printed materials, etc. shall be
bound with the dissertation where possible. Audio-
visual materials and/or magnetically stored
information shall be presented, separately wherever
possible, in appropriate folders and numbered. A note
in the beginning of the dissertation shall indicate a list
of materials that make up the entire contents of the
dissertation;
( c ) the final text shall follow the style sheet recommended
by the Board. Text shall be typed on A4 sheets, one
side only, double spacing and with a margin of 40 mm
to the left and at least 20 mm top, bottom and right.
