BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF 
PHILOSOPHY - M.PHIL. - IN THE FACULTY OF 
ARCHITECTURE AND CIVIL ENGINEERING

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil. - in the Faculty of Architecture
and Civil Engineering.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Faculty Board of Architecture and Civil
Engineering;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Master of
Philosophy - M.Phil. - in Architecture and Civil Engineering;
"the Degree’ means the Degree of Master of Philosophy - M.Phil.
Applicability.
Qualifications.
( a ) obtain a Bachelor in Engineering and Architecture
(Hons.) with a First Class or Second Class (Upper
Division) classification, and
( b ) obtain the same Bachelor degree at least one year and
not more than ten years before applying for the Master
of Philosophy course.
(2) Candidates who do not satisfy the requirements of bye-law
3(1), but who -
( a ) obtain the same Bachelor degree more than ten years
before; or
( b ) obtain the same Bachelor degree less than ten years
before, but with a Second Class (Lower Division)
Classification; or
( c ) graduate with a First Class or Second Class (Upper
Division) in the Bachelor of Science (Eng.) or the
Bachelor of Architecture (Hons.) from the University
of Malta or another University recognized by Senate;
or
( d ) graduate with a First Class or Second Class (Upper
Division) Classification in a related topic in the
University of Malta or another University recognized
by Senate.
(3) ( a ) Students may apply in special cases to the Board for

permission to register for the Degree. They shall in
these cases include evidence of competence to carry
out research in the proposed area, and shall also
provide a recommendation by the Head of Department.
( b ) The Board may, in each case, establish additional
requirements including the taking of one or more
qualifying examinations.
(4) The Board may nominate in accordance with regulation 3
of the Regulations for the award of the Degree one or more
supervisors for a particular project, even from outside the academic
staff of the Department concerned, except that it shall not normally
nominate any supervisor who does not have academic
qualifications of a level higher than that of Master of Philosophy.
Dissertation format 
and presentation.
4. (1) A student shall be required to present a short abstract
of his thesis of not more than 500 words, bound with each copy of
the thesis submitted to the University.
(2) A student may submit as subsidiary matter any printed
contributions to the advancement of his subject which he may have
published independently or conjointly. If a student submits such
subsidiary matter, he shall be required to state fully his own part in
any conjoint publications.
(3) A student shall be required to submit three copies of his
thesis, either typewritten or printed, and adequately bound for the
purposes of the oral examination. The student shall be required to
bring a fourth copy of the thesis similarly bound and paginated, for
the oral examination.
(4) The Student shall submit after the oral examination, and
after incorporating any amendments as the Board of Examiners
may require, two further copies hard bound in art vellum or cloth,
dark green in colour overcast with edges uncut, and with bold and
gold letters between 12 and 30 mm high up back as to the degree,
date, and name of student, and on the front as to the title of the
work The text shall be typed or printed on A4 sheets, one side only,
in double spacing, and with a margin of 40 mm to the left, and at
least 20 mm top, bottom and right. Drawings and maps, which are
unavoidably larger than A4, shall be properly folded to A4 size so
that they may be neatly bound within the thesis.
(5) One of these copies shall be deposited in the library of the
University of Malta and the other in the respective Departmental
Library.
