DIPLOMA IN AGRICULTURE - DIP. AGRIC. - 
COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in
Agriculture - Dip. Agric. - Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires:
"the Board" means the Board of the Institute of Agriculture;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma in
Agriculture - Dip. Agric.;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Agriculture - Dip. Agric;
"the Institute" means the Institute of Agriculture.
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in October
2002 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. A candidate shall in order to be eligible for the award of
the Diploma:
( a ) register as a regular student of the University of Malta
in the Institute of Agriculture for a period of one year;
( b ) complete the course, obtain the required credits and be
successful in the examinations in accordance with
these regulations;
( c ) submit a project report on an approved agricultural
subject to the satisfaction of the examiners; and
( d ) satisfy all other requirements established in these
regulations and in any other relevant Regulations and
the Statutes of the University.

4. A candidate may be registered as a regular student in the
course if he satisfies:
( a ) the entry requirements for registration in terms of the
Admission Regulations and obtains a pass at Advanced
level in Biology and Chemistry; or
( b ) the entry requirements for admission as probationary
students as specified in regulation 5, provided that
probationary students shall be required to complete
successfully a foundation programme as specified in
regulation 7.

for probationary 
students.
5. A candidate shall be in possession of one of the following
in order to be admitted as a probationary student in the course:
( a ) six Secondary Education Certificates, including

Maltese, English Language, Mathematics and a
science subject at grade 5 or better;
( b ) a diploma from the College of Agriculture of the
Department of Education with grade of merit or better,
or a similar qualification, which in the opinion of the
Board is equivalent to this qualification.
Duration of the 
course.
6. (1) The course shall extend over one year of full-time
studies for a regular student.
(2) A student may not take the final examinations before one
year and not later than two years from the first registration as a
regular student except with the permission of the Senate.
(3) A student who has first joined the course as a probationary
student may not sit for the final examinations later than three years
from first registration, except in special circumstances with the
permission of Senate.
Foundation 
programme.
7. (1) The Foundation programme extends over a period of
one year of full-time studies and is intended for probationary
students only. This programme shall consist of:
( a ) study-units to which not less than 20 credits are
assigned in the following 5 modules: Chemistry,
Biology, Biotechnology, Crop Science and Animal
Science;
( b ) agricultural practice to which not less than two credits
are assigned.
(2) A catalogue of study-units in each module, with the credits
assigned to each, shall be published by the Institute before the start
of each course.
(3) Credits are assigned according to the following grades in
descending order of merit: A, B, C, D or F where F indicates Fail.
A student who fails to obtain a credit for a study-unit is allowed to
be re-tested only once. The student’s credit shall be either D or F in
the re-assessment.
(4) Agricultural practice shall be carried out two days a week
at an approved establishment under the supervision of a field
teacher recognised by the Institute and subject to continuous
assessment.
(5) Examinations in the five modules listed in subregulation
(1)( a ) are normally held in June at the end of the foundation course
and shall consist of five written papers of three hours each. The
results of these examinations shall be graded A, B. C, D or F where
F indicates Fail. A student who fails to obtain a pass in any paper
shall be allowed to be re-examined once only in a supplementary
session, normally held in September. The student’s credit shall be
either D or F in the re-assessment.
(6) A probationary student who successfully completes the
foundation programme shall be entitled to be registered as a regular
student in the course.
Diploma 
programme.
8. (1) The Diploma programme shall consist of:

( a ) study-units to which not less than 24 credits are
assigned in the following 5 modules: Animal
Production, Crop Production, Soil Science,
Agricultural Economics and Business, and
Agricultural Engineering;
( b ) agricultural practice to which not less than two credits
are assigned;
( c ) project report of 5,000 words on an approved subject.
(2) A catalogue of each study-unit in each module, with the
credits assigned to each, shall be published by the Institute before
the start of each course.
(3) Credits are assigned according to the following grades in
descending order of merit: A, B, C, D or F where F indicates Fail.
A student who fails to obtain a credit for a study-unit is allowed to
be re-tested once only. The student’s credit shall either be D or F in
the re-assessment.
(4) Agricultural practice shall be carried out two days a week
at an approved establishment under the supervision of a field
teacher recognised by the Institute and subject to continuous
assessment.
(5) The student shall sit for an examination in each module
listed in subregulation (1)( a ) at the end of the year. Each module
shall be covered by one examination paper except for Animal
Production and Crop Production both of which shall be covered by
two papers each. The student shall be examined and graded on each
paper. Papers are graded in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D
and F where F indicates Fail.
(6) A student who fails to obtain a pass under subregulation
(5) in not more than three papers shall repeat the examinations only
once in a supplementary session normally held in September,
provided that the grade awarded to a supplementary examination
shall be either D or F.
(7) The Project Report shall be graded in descending order of
merit A, B, C, D and F where F indicates Fail. A student who fails
to obtain a pass in the project report shall be allowed one re-
submission of the report when the grade shall be D or F.

each module, and the merits of the project report.
(2) The names of the students who qualify for the Diploma
shall be published in alphabetical order and classified as follows:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
