REGULATIONS

Citation.
Socio-Legal Studies - B.A. (Socio-Legal Studies) Degree Course
and Diploma of Legal Procurator - L.P. - Regulations, and these
regulations are applicable to courses started in January 1987 or
later.
REGULATIONS FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS 
IN SOCIO-LEGAL STUDIES - B.A. (SOCIO-LEGAL STUDIES)
Eligibility for 
Degree.
1. To be eligible for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of
Arts in Socio-Legal Studies - B.A. (Socio-Legal Studies) - a
candidate must:
( a ) be registered as a matriculated student in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) satisfy the Special Course Requirements in accordance
with regulation 3;
( c ) complete the course of studies, qualify in the
examinations and satisfy any other requirements as
prescribed in these Regulations;
( d ) satisfy any other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant Statutes and Regulations of the University.
Duration of 
Course.
2. The Course of studies leading to the Degree of Bachelor of
Arts in Socio-Legal Studies extends over a period of three years as
specified in regulation 4.
Special course 
requirements.
3. To apply for admission to the course leading to the Degree
of Bachelor of Arts in Socio-Legal Studies a candidate must,
besides satisfying the conditions for admission as a regular student
in terms of the Admission Regulations of the University satisfy the
following Special Course Requirements:
passes at Advanced Level (two of which at Grade C or
better and the other at Grade D or better) in:
(i) English
(ii) Maltese
(iii) at least one of: Italian, French, Latin, Economics
and Philosophy
and, if not already offered at Advanced level, passes at
Ordinary level in:

(i) Italian
(ii) French or Latin
in the Matriculation Examination of the University or
at corresponding levels of other examinations
recognized by the Senate for the purposes of the
Admission Regulations:
Provided that a candidate who is a graduate of a university,
or has other qualifications considered to be sufficient, may be
exempted by the Admissions Board, on the advice of the Faculty
Admissions Committee, from the whole or part of these Special
Course Requirements.
Course 
Curriculum.
4.1 The programme of studies shall extend over three years,
and shall be divided into two Parts: Part One and Part Two.
4.2 Each part shall consist of a number of study-units to each
of which a specified number of credits shall be assigned.
4.3 The Faculty Board shall draw up a Schedule of study-units
and of the credits assigned to each. The Faculty Board may amend
such Schedule from time to time as it may deem advisable,
provided this is done before the beginning of the academic year.
4.4 A credit certificate, indicating the number of credits
assigned, will be issued to a student on the successful completion
of a study-unit. The certificate will also show a grade indicating the
standard attained by the student in the work done throughout the
study-unit. No credit will be given for an uncompleted study-unit.
4.5 The maximum and the minimum number of credits which a
student may attempt to acquire in any one academic year, and the
minimum number of credits required before admission to the
examinations held in the course are established in regulations 5 and
6.
4.6 The study-units shall consist of a group of compulsory and/
or elective units, forming streams of studies. The list of streams on
offer will be approved by the Faculty Baord and shall be as defined
in the syllabus.
4.7 The Faculty Board may exempt a student from the
requirement of obtaining a credit certificate for a particular study-
unit if he has obtained from the University, or an institution
recognised by the Senate for the purpose, a qualification the study
for which is. in the opinion of the Faculty Board, equivalent in
content and standard to that required for the credit certificate
concerned.
Part One. 5.1 Part One will extend over the first year of the course.
Candidates will register in this year for a number of study-units for
which a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 25 credits are assigned.
The Faculty Board may require students to register during
the First year for those study-units indicated by it.
Part Two. 6.1 Part Two will extend over the second and third years of the
course.

6.2 Candidates will register in each year for a number of study-
units for which a minimum of 25 and a maximum of 30 credits are
assigned.
6.3 A student shall be required to sit for final examinations at
the end of Part Two of the course.
6.4 Before being awarded a Degree a student must satisfy all
the examinations sat in accordance with these regulations and
present and have approved by the Faculty Board a short dissertation
of not more than forty and not less than twenty-five typed double-
spaced A4 pages on a subject submitted for the approval of the
Faculty Board not later than the end of January of the final year.
Credits, grades, 
examinations and 
assessments.
7.1 A student shall be normally required to sit for his
examinations after obtaining at least the number of credits
hereunder specified:
25 credits in Part One;
55 credits in Part Two.
This notwithstanding, the Faculty Board may require
candidates to sit for such part of the examinations as the Board may
determine before all the credits abovementioned are assigned.
7.2 The Faculty Board shall award students grades on the basis
of their general performance throughout the year in the subjects
taught in that year.
7.3 The said grades shall take into account the assessments,
and the results of written and oral examinations as provided in
regulation 7.6. Examinations shall be held in every subject unless
otherwise provided for in the syllabus.
7.4 Assessments shall be made in eacg subject taught and shall
take into consideration the course work and performance of each
student during the year. The assessment shall be made by the Head
of Department, or, in the event that he is debarred by the
Regulations of the University from being a member of the Board of
Examiners, by the Chairman of such Board.
7.5 There shall be a Committee of the Boards of Examiners
composed of all the members of the Boards of Examiners
examining in a particular year. The Committee shall be chaired by
the Dean of the Faculty and, in his absence, by a Head of
Department elected to chair the meeting by the Committee meeting.
The quorum of the Committee meetings shall consist of one more
than a third of the members thereof.
7.6 It shall be the function of the Committee of the Boards of
Examiners to consolidate the results obtained by eacg student and
to make recommendations to the Faculty Board regarding the
grading and/or the referral of students in the written and/or oral
examinations of any subject, and this in accordance with guidelines
laid down by the Faculty Board.
7.7 A student who is graded Failed in a particular year, and
remains so graded even after the referral referred to above, shall
not be allowed to proceed to the next year of the course. Such

student may, however, be allowed by the Faculty Board to rejoin
the course once only in terms of regulation 10.
Concurrent 
courses.
8. A student may follow concurrently the courses leading to
the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Socio-Legal Studies - B.A.
(Socio-Legal Studies) - and the Diploma of Legal Procurator - L.P.
Non-attendance. 9. A student who, after due warning given in writing,
persistently fails to attend lectures and/or tutorials without
adequate justification may be debarred by the Faculty Board from
sitting for any or all of the examinations.
Rejoining of 
course.
10. A student who has interrupted his course of studies or who
has failed in a particular year may be allowed by the Faculty Board
to rejoin the course in such year as the Faculty Board may deem
appropriate, and in so doing the Faculty Board may require such
student to sit for such further examinations, besides those specified
in the syllabus. as it may deem necessary:
Provided that in no case shall a student complete his course
of studies in a period longer than five years except with the special
permission of Senate for a good and sufficient cause.
REGULATIONS FOR THE DIPLOMA
OF LEGAL PROCURATOR - L.P.
Applicable 
regulations.
1. The Regulations applicable for the Degree of Bachelor of
Arts in Socio-Legal Studies - B.A. (Socio-Legal Studies) - shall
apply to students who take the Course leading to the Diploma of
Legal Procurator - L.P. - with the following exceptions and
variations:
(i) The study units for which the students shall register
for the purpose of regulation 6.2 of the aforementioned
regulations shall have assigned to them a minimum of
twenty and a maximum of twenty five credits per year.
Among the said study-units the students shall register
and obtain credits in those study-units which hall he
indicated to them by the Faculty Board.
(ii) The student following the Course for the Diploma of
Legal Procurator - L.P. - shall be exempted from
submitting a dissertation as required in regulation 6.4
of the aforementioned regulations.
(iii) For the purposes of regulation 7.1 of the
aforementioned regulations the students following the
Course for the Diploma of Legal Procurator - L.P. -
shall normally be required to obtain fifty credits in
Part Two of the Diploma Course before being allowed
to sit for their examinations.
Concurrent 
courses.
2. A student may follow concurrently the Courses leading to
the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Socio-Legal Studies - B.A.
(Socio-Legal Studies) - and the Diploma of Legal Procurator - L.P.
