UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE CERTIFICATE 
IN THE TEACHING OF SCIENCE AT PRIMARY 
LEVEL COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the University
Undergraduate Certificate in the Teaching of Science at Primary
Level Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the Certificate" means the University Undergraduate Certificate
in the Teaching of Science at Primary Level; and
"the course" means the course leading to the University
Undergraduate Certificate in the Teaching of Science at Primary
Level.
Applicability.
October 1998 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Certificate.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Certificate, candidates
must:
( a ) be registered as regular students in the course in terms
of the Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) complete the course of studies, pass in the Science
Field Placement, the Practical Science Project and the
final examination and satisfy all other requirements as
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfy all other requirements laid down in the relevant
statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the University.
Requirements for 
admission.
4. (1) Applicants may apply to register for the course if they
are currently teaching in primary schools and satisfy the following
requirements for admission:
( a ) possess a teachers’ certificate from the Teachers’
Training College and have five years’ consecutive
teaching experience; or
( b ) possess a B.Ed. (Hons) degree and have five years’
consecutive teaching experience; or
( c ) possess a B.A. or B.Sc. degree and a P.G.C.E. and
have five years’ consecutive teaching experience; or
( d ) they have been teaching for the past ten years and have

attended two in-service training courses organised by
the Education Division and/or other institutions
recognised by Senate for the purpose.
(2) Applicants may be asked to provide evidence of their
proficiency in the English Language.
Duration of course. 5. The course shall extend over one year of part-time study.
Students must complete the course in not less than one year and not
more than two years from the commencement of the course.
Course of studies. 6. (1) The course shall consist of the following:
( a ) study-units, to which not less than 8 credits shall be
assigned, in the following areas of study:
Basic Principles in Science (4 credits)
Science Education at Primary Level (4 credits);
( b ) a Science Field Placement (2 credits); and
( c ) a Practical Science Project (2 credits).
(2) The course may be delivered in any or all of the following
modes: distance learning, lectures, tutorials, practical work and
group seminars.
(3) A catalogue of study-units, indicating the credits assigned
to each, shall be published before the commencement of the course.
Assessment. 7. (1) Students shall be assessed in the study-units in
accordance with the criteria established by the Board of Studies.
(2) Students who fail in the assessment of a study-unit shall be
allowed one re-assessment. If successful, the maximum grade that
may be awarded shall be grade D.
Science Field 
Placement.
8. (1) Students are required to undertake a Science Field
Placement, which shall extend over 10 weeks, and shall take place
in primary schools.
(2) The Science Field Placement shall consist of a series of
science activities focusing on hands-on science activities in the
primary classroom. The objectives of this Field Placement shall be
specified during the course.
(3) The Science Field Placement shall be assessed on a Pass/
Fail basis.
(4) Students who fail in the Science Field Placement shall be
allowed to repeat it during the following year, as directed by the
Board of Studies.
Practical Science 
Project.
9. (1) Students shall be required to submit a school-based
Practical Science Project by not later than the last day of the
course.
(2) The subject of the Practical Science Project must be
submitted for approval by the Board of Studies by not later than
two months before the last day of the course.
(3) The Practical Science Project shall be assessed according
to the following grades in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D
and F, where F indicates Fail.

(4) Students who fail to satisfy the Board of Examiners in the
Practical Science Project shall be allowed to re-submit it once
within a period of six months.
Final examination.

(2) Only students who obtain at least 10 credits (excluding the
credits for the Practical Science Project) shall be allowed to sit for
the final examination. Without prejudice to the provisions of
regulation 5, students who do not obtain these credits may be
allowed by the Board of Studies to extend their studies by one year,
under those conditions it may impose.
(3) Students who fail in any or both of the examination papers
shall be allowed to re-sit the failed paper/s once in a supplementary
session to be held within a period of not more than six months from
the date of publication of results. The maximum grade that may be
awarded in the supplementary session shall be grade D.
Final result.
performance in the study-units, the Science Field Placement, the
Practical Science Project and the final examination, according to
the following weighting:
Credits for study-units, Science Field Placement
and Practical Science 70%
Final examination 30%.
(2) The names of the students who qualify for the award of the
certificate shall be published in a list in alphabetical order
classified as follows: 
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
