REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Certificate in
Desalination Studies - Cert. Desal. - and Diploma in Desalination
Studies - Dip. Desal. - Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of Studies appointed jointly by the
Senate of the University and the Board of the Institute for Water
Technology;
"the Certificate" means the Certificate in Desalination Studies -
Cert. Desal.;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma in
Desalination Studies;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Desalination Studies - Dip.
Desal.; and
"the Institute" means the Institute for Water Technology of the
Water Services Corporation.
Applicability.
in October 1995 or later.
Requirements for 
admission.
3. Candidates may register for the course if they:
( a ) are in possession of a qualification in Chemistry at
Advanced Level; and
( b ) satisfy the admission requirements of the University of
Malta.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
4. In order to be eligible for the award of the Diploma, a
student must:
( a ) register as a regular student in terms of the Admission
Regulations of the University;
( b ) successfully complete Part 1 (Foundation) and Part 2
(Intermediate) of the course;
( c ) register and successfully complete Part 3
(Specialisation) of the course;
( d ) satisfy the requirements for work experience;
( e ) pass in each of the final comprehensive examination

papers;
( f ) successfully submit a long essay, as stipulated in these
regulations; and
( g ) satisfy ail other requirements established in these
regulations and in any other relevant Statutes,
Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University.
Eligibility for the 
Certificate.
5. A student who successfully follows the course as specified
in regulation 4( b ), ( c ), ( d ), and ( e ), but fails to satisfy the examiners
in the long essay shall be awarded a Certificate.
Course duration. 6. The course leading to the Diploma shall normally extend
over a period of 12 months of full-time study. Students may,
however, apply for a part-time course by permission of the Board.
Any period of study or research in a part-time course shall be
counted as one half of the period followed in the full-time course.
Course of studies. 7. (1) The course shall be divided into three parts and shall
consist of study-units to which not less than 29 credits are assigned,
including:
( a ) study-units to which not less than 22 credits are
assigned;
( b ) a period of supervised work experience to which 5
credits are assigned; and
( c ) a long essay to which 2 credits are assigned.
(2) Part 1 of the course, entitled "Foundation", shall consist of
study-units to which a total of not less than 8 credits are assigned in
the following five modules:
Desalination Science
Desalination Processes
Water Chemistry
Electrochemistry
Basic Computing.
(3) Part 2 of the course, entitled "Intermediate", shall consist
of study-units to which not less than 10 credits are assigned in the
following five modules:
Membrane and Distillation Processes
Plant Engineering
Water Pre-treatment/Post-treatment
Operations Management
Fouling, Corrosion and Materials Selection. 
(4) Part 3 of the course, entitled "Specialisation", shall consist
of
( a ) four study-units, to each of which not less than one
credit is assigned, selected from the three modules
covering the following areas of study:

Feed Water Chemistry and Pretreatment
Distillation Technology.
Students must follow one complete module consisting
of three study-units, as well as another study-unit from
any of the other modules;
( b ) a period of supervised work experience, with a
minimum duration of 250 hours, to which 5 credits are
assigned; and
( c ) a long essay, normally of not less than 8,000 words, to
which 2 credits are assigned.
(5) The work experience must be undertaken with a particular
Technical Branch of the Water Services Corporation under the
direct supervision of the Branch Head.
(6) The following grades shall be used in the allocation of
credits in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D, and F, where F
indicates a Failure.

the course unless they obtain a minimum of 6 credits and satisfy the
Board in a written two-paper examination held at the end of Part 1.
(2) Students shall not be allowed to proceed to Part 3 of the
course unless they obtain a minimum of 8 credits and satisfy the
Board in a written two-paper examination held at the end of Part 2.
(3) The work experience shall be assessed by the Board who
shall take into consideration the reports submitted by the Branch
Head who supervised the student, in consultation with his group
managers, as well as by means of an interview held by the Board.
(4) Students who fail to satisfy the Board regarding their
performance during the work experience shall not be allowed to
repeat the work experience.
(5) Students shall not be allowed to sit for the final
comprehensive examination unless they are successfully assessed
in their work experience, and unless they obtain a minimum of 3
credits in Part 3 of the course.

examination.
9. The final comprehensive examination shall consist of two
papers each of three hours’ duration. Students who fail in one or
both papers may be allowed a resit in the failed paper/s. The
highest grade that may be awarded in a resit shall be grade D.
Long essay.
unless they are successful in the final comprehensive examination.
Students must submit the title of their long essay for the approval
of the Board, by not later than one week after the publication of the
results of the final comprehensive examination. Students may be
required by the Board to sit for an oral examination on submission
of the long essay. Students who fail to satisfy the examiners in the
long essay may be asked by the Board to submit a revised version
of the long essay within eight weeks of the publication of the
results. In such a case the highest grade that may be awarded is the

minimum grade D.
Final results. 11. (1) The final results of a student shall take into account his
performance in the final comprehensive examination as well as the
credits and grades obtained during the course.
(2) The final comprehensive examination shall carry 50% of
the weighting and the credits shall carry the other 50% of the
weighting for classification purposes.
(3) The final results shall be published after the assessment of
the long essay, classified as follows:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
