IN THE EDUCATION OF CHILDREN WITH 
LEARNING DIFFICULTIES - CERT. ECLD - 
COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the University
Undergraduate Certificate in the Education of Children with
Learning Difficulties - Cert. ECLD - Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the Certificate" means the University Undergraduate Certificate
in the Education of Children with Learning Difficulties - Cert.
ECLD.; and
"the course" means the course leading to the University
Undergraduate Certificate in the Education of Children with
Learning Difficulties - Cert. ECLD.
Applicability.
1997 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Certificate.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Certificate students
must:
( a ) be registered as regular students in the course in terms
of the Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) complete the course of studies, qualify in the final
examination, successfully complete the practice
placements, and satisfy any other requirements as
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfy any other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Registration and 
special course 
requirements.
4. (1) To be registered as regular students in the course
candidates must, besides satisfying the general entry requirements
specified in the Admission Regulations of the University:
( a ) possess a teaching qualification recognised by the
Board and have at least one year teaching experience;
and
( b ) satisfy the Board that they have the aptitude required
for the exercise of the duties related to the proposed
studies; for this purpose they may be required to attend
for an interview.

(2) The Board shall determine the number of candidates that
may be registered for the course depending on the availability of
resources. The Board shall announce the number of available
places at the time of the publication of the call for applications.
Course duration. 5. (1) The course shall extend over a period of one year of
part-time study.
(2) The Board may allow students who, for good and sufficient
reason, cannot complete the course in one year to extend their
period of study by another year.
Course structure. 6. (1) The course shall consist of fifteen study-units to each
of which one credit shall be assigned.
(2) Two of the fifteen study-units shall consist of supervised
practice placements.
(3) Students must complete successfully at least twelve of the
thirteen taught study-units.
(4) The course shall consist of the following main areas of
study:
( a ) understanding the nature and context of learning
difficulties;
( b ) ensuring access to the curriculum;
( c ) developing strategies for individualising provisions;
( d ) promoting support networks; and
( e ) relevant practical work.
Assessment and 
final examination.
7. (1) Students who fail in more than one of the taught study-
units and/or in the practice placements may be allowed to be re-
assessed once only within twelve months from the end of the
course. In the re-assessment, the maximum grade that may be
awarded shall be grade D.
(2) Students shall be required to sit for the final examination at
the end of the course if they have successfully completed at least
twelve of the thirteen taught study-units and the two practice
placements.
(3) The final examination shall consist of one three-hour
written, competency-based paper held at the end of the course.
(4) Students who fail the final examination may be allowed by
the Board to resit the paper once only within twelve months from
the end of the course. If successful in the resit, the maximum grade
that may be awarded shall be grade D.
(5) The taught study-units and the final examination shall be
assigned the following grades in descending order of merit: A+, A,
B+, B, C+, C, D+, D and F, where F indicates Fail.
(6) The practice placements shall be assessed on a Pass/Fail
basis.
(7) Students who, after reassessment, fail to obtain twelve
credits for the taught study-units and/or fail in any of the two

practice placements or fail in the final examination shall not qualify
for the award of the Certificate.
Results and award 
of the Certificate.
8. (1) The final result shall take into account the performance
of the students according to the following weighting:
Coursework 70%
Final examination 30%.
(2) Students whose performance in the theory and practice
components of the course is consistently outstanding may be
awarded an overall Pass with Distinction.
(3) The names of all students who qualify for the award of the
Certificate shall be published in a list in alphabetical order in one
of the following categories:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
Requirements to 
proceed to Part II.
9. The Certificate shall be regarded as satisfying the
requirements to proceed to Part II of the Diploma in Education
(Children with Special Needs) course, provided that holders of the
Certificate join Part II of the Diploma course not later than four
years after the Certificate is awarded.
