DIPLOMA IN PROBATION SERVICES 
COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in
Probation Services Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed in
terms of regulation 5(1);
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma in
Probation Services; and
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Probation Services.
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in October
1999 or later.
Eligibility for 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma a student must:
( a ) be registered as a regular student of the University;
( b ) complete the appropriate studies (coursework and
practical work) in Probation Services;
( c ) pass all prescribed examinations;
( d ) complete all the requirements laid down in these
regulations, and in any other statutes, regulations and
bye-laws of the University.
Registration and 
requirements for 
admission.
4. (1) Applicants may be registered as students in the course
if they are:
( a ) eligible for admission to the University as regular
students in terms of the Admission Regulations of the
University; and
( b ) in possession of a qualification in social work, such as
a degree with a social work option, or a diploma or a
degree in social work, or a qualification in socio-legal
studies, such as a degree in socio-legal studies, or
other related professional qualifications acceptable to
the Board of Studies.
(2) Applicants may be asked to attend an interview for the
purposes of assessing that they have the required aptitudes and
background.

be appointed by Senate on the recommendation of the Board of the
Institute of Forensic Studies.
(2) The Course Co-ordinator shall be responsible for the
drawing up of the syllabuses and the catalogue of study-units, as
well as for the preparation of support material, with the co-
operation and approval of the Board of Studies.
Course of studies.

6. (1) The course extends over one tear of full-time studies,
or its equivalent.
(2) The course shall consist of:
( a ) study-units and practical work, for which not less than
25 credits are assigned; and
( b ) a final comprehensive examination.
(3) The Board of Studies shall draw up a catalogue of study-
units. The catalogue shall indicate the level, code, title, description
and type of each study-unit, the credits assigned to each study-unit,
which study-units are compulsory, concurrent or pre-requisites for
other study-units, the methods of teaching and assessment. The
Board shall publish the catalogue for the course prior to its
commencement, after approval by Senate.
Assessment. 7. (1) In each semester of the course, students shall be
assessed in the study-units covered during that semester in
accordance with the criteria established by the Board of Studies.
(2) The following grades shall be used in the award of credits,
in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D and F, with F indicating
failure.
(3) Students who fail in the assessment of a study unit shall be
allowed one re-sit. If successful in the re-sit, the maximum grade
that may be awarded shall be grade D. If unsuccessful, the students
shall be required to repeat the study-unit.
(4) Students shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of the course if they:
( a ) satisfactorily complete all the required study-units and
practical work; and
( b ) are successful in the final comprehensive examination.

8. (1) The final comprehensive examination shall consist of
two written papers.
(2) Students shall be allowed to sit for the final comprehensive
examination only if they have obtained not less than 25 credits,
including credits for study-units indicated as compulsory.
(3) Should the results of any study-unit or of the practical
work be not available when the final comprehensive examination is
due to be held, students may be allowed to sit for the examination
on condition that the examination shall be valid only if the required
credits are obtained.
Final result. 9. (1) The final result shall be based on the students’
performance in the coursework, the practical work and the final
comprehensive examination in the following proportions:

Coursework 40%
Practical work 10%
Final comprehensive examination 50%.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the Diploma shall
be published in a list in alphabetical order in the following
categories:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
