POLICE STUDIES, DIPLOMA IN CORRECTIONAL 
SERVICES AND DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS 
IN CRIMINOLOGY COURSES REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Certificate in
Criminology, Diploma in Police Studies, Diploma in Correctional
Services and Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Criminology Courses
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of Directors of the Institute of
Forensic Studies;
"the Certificate" means the Certificate in Criminology;
"the course" means the course leading to the Certificate in
Criminology, Diploma in Police Studies, Diploma in Correctional
Services and Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Criminology;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in
Criminology; and
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Police Studies or the
Diploma in Correctional Services.
Applicability.
October 1994 or later.
Eligibility.
must have:
( a ) been registered as regular students;
( b ) completed the course of studies, passed the final
examination and satisfied any other requirements as
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfied all other requirements laid down in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
(2) Students who are otherwise eligible for the award of the
Certificate shall forfeit the award of the Certificate if they opt to
proceed with the course leading to the Diploma in Police Studies or
the Diploma in Correctional Services.
(3) To be eligible for the award of the Diploma in Police
Studies students must have:
( a ) been registered as regular students;

( b ) successfully completed the course of studies leading to
the Certificate;
( c ) completed the course of studies, passed the final
examination and satisfied any other requirements as
prescribed in these regulations; and
( d ) satisfied all other requirements laid down in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
(4) To be eligible for the award of the Diploma in Correctional
Services students must have:
( a ) been registered as regular students;
( b ) successfully completed the course of studies leading to
the Certificate;
( c ) completed the course of studies, passed the final
examination and satisfied any other requirements as
prescribed in these regulations; and
( d ) satisfied all other requirements laid down in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
(5) Students who are otherwise eligible for the award of the
Diploma in Police Studies or the Diploma in Correctional Services
shall forfeit the award of the Diploma if they opt to proceed with
the course leading to the Degree.
(6) To be eligible for the award of the Degree students must
have:
( a ) satisfied the eligibility requirements for the award of
the Certificate and either the Diploma in Police
Studies or the Diploma in Correctional Services;
( b ) registered for the Degree course after the end of the
Diploma course;
( c ) completed the course of studies, passed the final
examination and satisfied any other requirements as
prescribed in these regulations; and
( d ) complied with any other requirements prescribed in
any other relevant ant statutes, regulations and bye-
laws of the University.
Registration. 4. (1) Candidates may be registered for the course of studies
leading to the Certificate according to the provisions of these
regulations, if they are eligible for admission as regular students in
terms of the Admission Regulations of the University.
 (2) Candidates may be registered for the course of studies
leading to the Diploma in Police Studies or the Diploma in
Correctional Services according to the provisions of these
regulations, if they have obtained at least a Pass in the Certificate
course.
(3) Candidates may be registered for the course of studies

leading to the Degree according to the provisions of these
regulations, if they have obtained at least a Pass in either of the
Diploma courses.
Certificate course 
programme.
5. (1) The course of studies leading to the Certificate shall
extend over a period of two calendar years of part-time study.
(2) The course of studies shall consist of study-units to which
not less than thirty credits are assigned, in the following modules:
Module A: The Criminal Justice System
Module B: Criminal Law and Procedure for Criminal
Justice Personnel
Module C: Criminology
Module D: Ethics and Human Rights in Criminal
Justice
Module E: Juvenile Delinquency
Module F: International/Comparative Criminology/
Criminal Justice
Module G: Domestic Violence
Module H: Substance Abuse.
(3) A catalogue of study-units in each module, with the credits
assigned to each, shall be published before the start of each course.
(4) The catalogue shall also indicate the number of
assessments for each study-unit and which study-units are
compulsory or recommended.
(5) In order to be eligible for the award of the Certificate
students must have registered for study-units to which not less than
thirty credits are assigned and must have obtained at least twenty-
five credits over a period of two calendar years.

(2) The names of students who successfully complete the
course shall be published in a list in alphabetical order in the
following categories:

9. (1) The course of studies leading to the Diploma in Police
Studies shall extend over a period of three calendar years of part
time study, including the two years for the Certificate course.
(2) The course of studies shall consist of study-units to which
not less than twelve credits are assigned, in the following modules:
Module I: Introduction to Policing
Module J: Crime Prevention
Module K: Crime Investigation
Module L: Issues in Policing.
(3) A catalogue of study-units in each module, with the credits
assigned to each, shall be published before the start of each course.
(4) The catalogue shall also indicate the number of
assessments for each study-unit and which study-units are
compulsory or recommended.
(5) In order to be eligible for the award of the Diploma in
Police Studies students must have registered for study-units to
which not less than ten credits are assigned and must have obtained
at least ten credits over a period of one calendar year.
Assessment. 10. (1) Credits shall be assigned according to the following
grades, in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D and F, where F
signifies a failure.
(2) Students who fail a study-unit shall be allowed to take a re-
sit in that study-unit once only. If successful, the maximum grade
that may be awarded shall be grade D.
Final examination. 11. (1) Students who have obtained the minimum number of
credits as indicated in regulation 9(5) shall be required to sit for the
final examination.
(2) The final examination shall be held at the end of the
course, normally in May/June and shall consist of two
comprehensive papers.
(3) Students who fail the final examination shall be allowed to
take a re-sit once within a period of twelve months from the end of
the course. In such cases the maximum grade that may be awarded
shall be grade D.
Final results. 12. (1) The final results shall take into account the
performance of the students  in all the components of the course,
including the results obtained in the components of the Certificate
course.
(2) The names of the students who successfully complete the
course shall be published in a list in alphabetical order in the

Correctional Services shall extend over a period of three calendar

compulsory or recommended.
(5) In order to be eligible for the award of the Diploma in
Correctional Services students must have registered for study-units

17. (1) The course of studies leading to the Degree shall
extend over a period of live calendar years of part-time study,
including the two years required to obtain the Certificate and the
one year required to obtain either the Diploma in Police Studies or
the Diploma in Correctional Services.
(2) The course of studies shall consist of study-units to which
not less than twenty-five credits are e assigned in the following
modules:
Module M: Research Methods I
Module N: Research Methods II
Module O: Inter disciplinary Forensic Studies
Module P: Practicum
Module Q: Dissertation.
(3) A catalogue of study-units in each module, with the credits
assigned to each, shall be published before the start of each course.
(4) The catalogue shall also indicate the number of
assessments for each study-unit and which study-units are
compulsory or recommended.
(5) In order to be eligible for the award of the Degree students
must obtain at least sixty-five credits over a period of five calendar
years.
Assessment. 18. (1) Credits shall be assigned according to the following
grades, in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D and F, where F
signifies a failure.
(2) Students who fail a study-unit shall be allowed to take a re-
sit in that study-unit once only. If successful, the maximum grade
that may be awarded shall be grade D.
Final examination. 19. (1) Students who have obtained the minimum number of
credits as indicated in regulation 17(5) shall be required to sit for
the final examination.
(2) The final examination shall be held at the end of the
course, normally in May/June and shall consist of four
comprehensive papers.
(3) Students may not take the final examination earlier than
five years or later than six years from first admission to the course,
except with the permission of Senate given in special
circumstances.
(4) Students who fail any or all of the final examination papers
shall be allowed to re-sit the failed paper/e once within a period of
twelve months from the end of the course. In such cases the
maximum grade that may be awarded shall be grade D.
Final results. 20. (1) The final results shall take into account the
performance of the students in all the components of the course,

categories: I, IIA, IIB, and III.
