CENTRE CERTIFICATE IN APPLIED SOCIAL 
STUDIES COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Workers’
Participation Development Centre Certificate in Applied Social
Studies Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed as
indicated in regulation 5;
"the Certificate" means the Workers’ Participation Development
Centre Certificate in Applied Social Studies; and
"the course" means the course leading to the Certificate.

2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in
February 2002 or later.
Eligibility.
must have:
( a ) been registered as a student in the course;
( b ) completed the appropriate study-units and obtained the
credits assigned to each of them; and
( c ) satisfied all the requirements laid down in these
regulations and in any other relevant statutes,
regulations and bye-laws of the University.
Registration.
positive assessment made by the Board of Studies of his ability to
pursue it with profit.
Board of Studies.
entrusted to a Board of Studies appointed by Senate for the
purpose, on the recommendation of the Workers’ Participation
Development Centre (WPDC) Board.
Course structure.

6. (1) The course of studies shall be structured in such a way
that it can be completed in one semester of full-time studies, or its
equivalent in part-time studies.
(2) The course shall consist of study-units to which not less
than ten credits shall be assigned.
(3) The study-units shall be in one of the following areas of
specialisation:
( a ) Industrial Relations;

( b ) Occupational Health and Safety;
( c ) Gender and Development; and
( d ) Management of Co-operatives.
(4) The study-units shall cover the following subjects:
( a ) Industrial Relations: Sociology of Work
Organisational
Psychology
Workplace
Democratisation
( b ) Occupational Health and Safety: People, Work and
Organisation
Occupational Safety
Principles
Occupational Health
and Safety Policies
( c ) Gender and Development: Basic Social Science
Interpersonal
Behaviour
Human Development
( d ) Management of Co-operatives: Co-operative
Principles and
Organisation
Human Resource
Management
Co-operative
Development Policy.
(5) A catalogue of study-units, including the credits assigned
to each and which study-units are compulsory, shall be approved by
the WPDC Board following the recommendation of the Board of
Studies and shall be published before the start of each course.
Assessment. 7. (1) In each semester of the course, students shall he
assessed in the study-units covered during that semester in
accordance with the criteria established by the Board.
(2) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D and F, where F indicates
Fail.
(3) A student who registers for a study-unit and does not
complete it shall be considered to have failed that study-unit.
(4) A student who fails in any study-unit may be allowed to re-
take the assessment procedure of that study-unit. A student may
only be allowed to repeat each of the study-units once. In such
cases, the maximum grade a student can obtain is a D.
(5) In special circumstances, provided that due warning has
been given, the Board of Studies may recommend to Senate that a
student terminates the course if, on the basis of reports given by the
lecturers involved, the Board of Studies is not satisfied that the
student is making the expected progress.
Award of 
Certificate.
8. (1) Students shall be awarded the Certificate if they obtain

CERTIFICATE IN APPLIED SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE ġ S.L.327.164 3
a minimum of ten credits in the area of specialisation chosen.
(2) The names of students who successfully complete the
Course shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as
Passed.
