POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN DIPLOMACY - P.G. 
DIP. DIPLOMACY - COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Postgraduate
Diploma in Diplomacy - P.G. Dip. Diplomacy - Course
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Academy" means the Mediterranean Academy of
Diplomatic Studies of the University of Malta;
"the Board" means the Board of Studies, appointed in terms of
regulation 5(1);
"the course" means the course leading to the Postgraduate
Diploma in Diplomacy - P.G. Dip. Diplomacy; and
"the Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma in Diplomacy
P.G. Dip. Diplomacy.
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in
February 2002 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students must:
( a ) register as regular students of the University;
( b ) successfully complete the appropriate course of
studies, consisting of coursework and practical work in
Diplomacy and Information Technology; and
( c ) satisfy all the requirements established in these
regulations, and in any other relevant statutes,
regulations and bye-laws of the University.
Requirements for 
admission and 
selection of 
applicants.

4. (1) Applicants may be registered as students in the course
if they are:
( a ) eligible for admission to the University as regular
students in terms of the Admission Regulations of the
University; and
( b ) in possession of a degree from a university recognised
by the Senate for the purpose, or hold appropriate
professional qualifications together with three years
related professional experience that are acceptable to
the Board.
(2) Applicants may be asked to attend an interview for the
purposes of assessment of the required aptitudes and background.
(3) The course is limited to twenty students, of whom not more
than two from any one country, unless the total number of qualified
applicants is less than twenty.

(4) If there are more than two eligible applicants from any one
country, the best two applicants shall be selected through an
interview whereby they shall be required to satisfy the Board that
they have the necessary qualifications to follow the course,
including:
(i) professional knowledge and aptitute;
(ii) knowledge of Information Technology; and
(iii) familiarity with the use of Information
Technology in Diplomacy.
Board of Studies. 5. (1) The general administration of the course shall be
entrusted to a Board of Studies composed of the Director of the
Academy or his nominee as Chairman, a Course Co-ordinator, and
three academic members. The Board shall be appointed by Senate
on the recommendation of the Board of the Academy.
(2) The Course Co-ordinator shall be responsible for the
drawing up of the syllabuses and the catalogue of study-units, as
well as for the preparation of teaching material, with the co-
operation and approval of the Board.
Course of studies.

6. (1) Students shall be required to complete the course in not
less than nine months and not more than fifteen months.
(2) The course shall be conducted in two phases:
( a ) first phase - Introductory Workshop, which shall be
organised at the University of Malta or at a venue
assigned by the University of Malta lasting for about
ten working days. Students shall be introduced to
various subjects and trained in the necessary skills for
the distance learning phase; and
( b ) second phase - Distance Learning, which shall be
conducted via the Internet. The duration of this phase
shall depend on each student but it should last not less
than nine months and not more than fifteen months.
(3) The course shall focus mainly on Information Technology
for Diplomacy and shall consist of taught study-units, to which
twenty-two credits are assigned, and a research project, to which
eight credits are assigned.
(4) A catalogue of study-units, including the credits assigned
to each study-unit and which of them are compulsory, shall be
published by the Board before the commencement of the course.
Research project. 7. (1) All students shall be required to present a research
project of about 20,000 words as directed by the Board.
(2) Students who fail the research project shall be allowed to
resubmit it once within a period of two months.
Assessment. 8. (1) Students shall be assessed in the study-units during the
Course in accordance with the criteria established by the Board.
(2) The following grading scheme shall be followed in the
allocation of credits: A, B, C, D and F, in descending order of
merit, with F indicating Fail.
(3) Students who fail in the assessment of a study-unit shall be

allowed a re-assessment once only. If successful, the maximum
grade that may be awarded shall be grade D.
(4) Students shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of the course if they obtain a minimum of
twenty-five credits (including those assigned to the research project
and to any compulsory study-units).
Final result.
Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order in the
following categories:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
