BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF 
PHILOSOPHY - PH.D. - IN THE INSTITUTE FOR 
MASONRY AND CONSTRUCTION RESEARCH

LEGAL NOTICE 56 of 2000.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these bye-laws is Bye-Laws for the Degree
of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - in the Institute for Masonry and
Construction Research.
(2) In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Institute for Masonry and
Construction Research;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.;
and
"the Institute" means the Institute for Masonry and Construction
Research.
Applicability.

Admission

3. To register for the Degree, candidates must satisfy the
admission requirements as specified in the Regulations for the
degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
Research 
proposals.
4. Candidates’ research proposals should indicate clearly the
research questions in the field to be addressed, the hypotheses to be
tested and the methodology to be adopted in dealing with the
research issues. If the Board deems it necessary, candidates may be
required to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the
related nature of the investigation.
Registration for the 
degree of Master of 
Philosophy.
5. Before registering for the Degree, candidates shall
normally be required to register in the first instance for the degree
of Master of Philosophy. Only in exceptional circumstances shall
candidates be considered for direct registration to the Degree.
Progress and 
supervision.
6. Students shall be required to register every twelve months
on the written recommendation of their supervisor.
Supervisor.

shall not normally nominate as supervisor a person whose academic
qualifications are of a level lower than that of the degree of Doctor
of Philosophy.
Seminars.

Thesis.

power in reaching the reported conclusions. In both respects, the
student must indicate clearly the extent to which the thesis
embodies the results of his own research and observations, and to
what extent the investigation advances the study of the subject.
Changes to title. 10. Any changes to the title of the thesis must first be approved
by the Board, on the written recommendation of the supervisor, and
shall then be submitted for the approval of Senate.
Thesis format and 
presentation.
11. The thesis shall not normally be less than 35,000 words
and shall not exceed 60,000 words, exclusive of appendices,
bibliographies, glossaries and footnotes.
Copies. 12. Students shall be required t.o submit three copies of the
thesis, either typewritten or printed, and adequately bound for the
purpose of the oral examination. They shall be required to bring to
the oral examination a fourth copy of the thesis, similarly bound
and paginated.
Hard bound copies. 13. ( a ) After the oral examination, and after incorporating any
amendments the Board of Examiners may require,
students shall submit two further copies hard bound in
art vellum or cloth, dark maroon in colour, overcut
with edges uncut, and lettered boldly in gold up back
indicating the degree, the date and the name of the
student, and on the front. the title of the work. The
letters shall be between 12mm and 30mm high.
( b ) The text must be typed or printed on A4 sheets, on one
side only, in double spacing, and with a margin of
40mm to the left, and at least 20mm top, bottom and
right.
( c ) Drawings, maps and other illustrations, which are
unavoidably larger than A4 shall be properly folded to
A4 size, so that they can be neatly bound within the
thesis.
( d ) Students shall also be required to present a short
abstract of their thesis of not more than 500 words
which shall be bound with each copy of the thesis
submitted to the University. One of these copies shall
be deposited in the Library of the University of Malta,
and the other in the library of the Institute.
Publication of part 
of the work.
14. Students may, with the permission of the Board, publish
part of the work prior to its submission as a thesis, provided that in
the published work it is nowhere stated that it is in consideration
for a higher degree. Such published work may later be incorporated
in the thesis submitted to the University.
