DIPLOMA IN COMPUTER STUDIES EDUCATION -
DIP. C.S. ED. - COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in
Computer Studies Education - Dip. C.S. Ed. - Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education;
"the Board of Studies" means t.he Board of Studies appointed for
the course;
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Computer Studies
Education Dip. C.S. Ed.; and
"the course" means the course of studies leading to the Diploma.
Applicability.
Amended by:
L.N. 300 of 2002.
2. These regulations shall be applicable to courses starting in
October 2002 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students must:
( a ) be registered as regular students in the course in terms
of the Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) successfully complete the course of studies and satisfy
any other requirements as prescribed in these
regulations; and
( c ) satisfy any other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Special course 
requirements and 
selection of 
applicants.
4. (1) Applicants may be registered for the course according
to the provisions of these regulations, if they:
( a ) possess a teaching qualification recognised by the
Board;
( b ) are serving teachers in a recognised secondary school:
and
( c ) through an interview satisfy the Board that they have
the necessary qualifications to follow the course,
including:
(i) professional knowledge and aptitude;
(ii) knowledge of Information Technology; and
(iii) familiarity with the use of Information
Technology in Education.
(2) The Board shall recommend to Senate the number of
applicants that may be allowed to register for the course depending
on the availability of resources. The number of available places

shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.
(3) If there are more eligible applicants than the number of
places available, applicants shall be selected on their performance
in the interview.
Course duration. 5. (1) The course shall extend over two years of part-time
study. In special circumstances, the Board may allow a student to
complete the course in a maximum of three years.
(2) The course shall be divided in two parts, each part
extending over a period of one year of part-time study.
Course of studies. 6. (1) The course of studies shall consist of:
( a ) study-units, to which a total of 24 credits shall be
assigned, in the following areas of study:
Basic Computer Studies Knowledge and Skills;
Methodological and Pedagogical Issues in Computer
Studies Education;
Theoretical Trends and Issues in Computer Studies
Education;
( b ) a practical placement period in each part of the course,
each of which shall be assigned 2 credits; and
( c ) a long essay/project, to which 2 credits shall be
assigned.
(2) A catalogue of study-units, and of the credits assigned to
each, shall be published before the commencement of the course.
Part I of the course. 7. (1) Part I shall extend over the first year of the course.
(2) Part I shall consist of study-units to which a total of 12
credits shall be assigned, and the Part I practical placement.
(3) The study-units shall be offered in the following areas of
study:
Basic Computer Studies Knowledge and Skills;
Methodological and Pedagogical Issues in Computer
Studies Education;
Theoretical Trends and Issues in Computer Studies
Education.
Part II of the 
course.
8. (1) Part II shall extend over the second year of the course.
(2) Students will be allowed to register for Part II of the course
only if they have successfully completed Part I of t.he course.
(3) Part II shall consist of study-units, to which a total of 12
credits shall be assigned, the Part II practical placement, and the
long essay/project.
(4) The study-units shall be offered in the following areas of
study:
Basic Computer Studies Knowledge and Skills;
Methodological and Pedagogical Issues in Computer
Studies Education;

Theoretical Trends and Issues in Computer Studies

Assessment.
assessment criteria of Part I of the course if they obtain:
( a ) a minimum of 10 of the 12 credits assigned to the
study-units; and
( b ) the 2 credits assigned to the Part I practical placement.
(2) Students shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of Part II of the course if they obtain:
( a ) a minimum of 10 of the 12 credits assigned to the
study-units;
( b ) the 2 credits assigned to the Part II practical
placement; and
( c ) the 2 credits assigned to the long essay/project.
(3) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+ and D. F
indicates Fail, and I indicates Incomplete. To be eligible for the
award of a credit, students must also attend regularly for lectures in
each study-unit.
(4) Students who fail in the assessment of a study-unit shall be
allowed a re-assessment once only. If successful, the maximum
grade that may be awarded shall be grade D.
(5) If after re-assessment, students do not qualify to proceed to
Year II, they shall be required to withdraw from the course.
Practical 
placements.
10. (1) The Part I and Part II practical placements shall each
extend over six weeks and shall take place in the school where the
students are posted.
(2) Students who fail the Part I practical placement. shall be
allowed to repeat it once within the first three months of the
following academic year. If successful, the maximum grade that
may be awarded shall be grade D. In such cases, students shall be
allowed to proceed to Part II of the course conditional to their
obtaining a pass in this component within the stipulated time
period.
(3) Students who fail the Part II practical placement shall be
allowed to repeat it once, within the first three months of the
following academic year. If successful, t.he maximum grade that
may be awarded shall be grade D.
Long essay/
project.
11. (1) Students shall be required to submit a long essay of
between 6,000 and 8,000 words. or a project deemed to be of
equivalent academic standard by the Board of Studies, by not later
than two months before the end of Part II of the course.
(2) The long essay/project proposal shall be submitted for
approval by the Board of Studies by the end of Part I of the course.
(3) Students who fail the long essay/project shall be allowed to
re-submit it once within the first three months of the following
academic year.

Final grading.

12. (1) To qualify for the Diploma, students must have
successfully completed both parts of the course, obtaining a
minimum of 26 credits over both parts, which must include all
credits assigned to the two practical placernents and to the long
essay/project.
(2) For the purpose of computing the final classification, each
component (study-units, long essay/project, and practical
placements) shall be weighted in proportion to the number of
credits assigned to it.
(3) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
Diploma shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified
as follows:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
