POSTQUALIFICATION CERTIFICATE IN SOCIAL 
CARE COURSE REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Postqualification
Certificate in Social Care Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Economics,
Management and Accountancy;
"the Board of Studies" means the Board of Studies appointed by
Senate for the course;
"the Certificate" means the Postqualification Certificate in Social
Care; and
"the course" means the course of studies leading to the
Postqualification Certificate in Social Care.
Applicability.
February 2002 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Certificate.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Certificate, students
must:
( a ) be registered for, and successfully complete, the full
course of studies as provided in these regulations;
( b ) complete the appropriate study-units and obtain the
credits assigned to each of them; and
( c ) satisfy all the other requirements laid down in these
regulations and in any other relevant statutes,
regulations and bye-laws of the University.
Admission 
requirements.
4. (1) Applicants shall be eligible to join the course if they
satisfy the following requirements:
( a ) they are in possession of a degree in Social Work, in
Psychology or in Youth and Community Studies, or of
a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work, together with
a minimum of one year of full-time practice, or its
equivalent, in an institution recognised by the Board
for this purpose; or
( b ) they are in possession of a Diploma in Social Work or
a Diploma in Applied Social Studies (Social Work) or
an equivalent professional qualification in social work,
together with a minimum of one year of full-time
practice, or its equivalent, in an institution recognised
by the Board for this purpose; and
( c ) they are currently involved in the practice of the
profession.

(2) Applicants may be required to undertake additional studies
as pre-requisite, as the Board of Studies may in each case
determine, so that they may be able to follow the course with profit.
Course of studies. 5. (1) The course of studies shall be structured in such a way
that it can be completed in three semesters of part-time studies.
(2) The course shall consist of study-units to which not less
than fifteen credits shall be assigned.
(3) The study-units shall be offered in the following areas of
study:
( a ) Working with Children and Families; and
( b ) any other specialised area approved by Board for this
purpose.
Catalogue of 
study-units.
6. The Board of Studies shall draw up a catalogue of study-
units. The catalogue shall indicate the code, title, description and
type of each study-unit, the credits assigned to each, which study-
units are compulsory, optional, or pre-requisites, and the methods
of teaching and assessment. The catalogue for the course shall be
published before the commencement of each course, after approval
by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board.
Progress and 
assessment.
7. (1) In each semester of the course, students shall be
assessed in the study-units covered during that semester, in
accordance with the criteria established by the Board.
(2) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B, C, and D. Failure shall be
indicat.ed by F. Incomplete work due to justifiable reasons (illness,
approved absence, etc.) shall be indicated by I. In all other cases,
the results of uncompleted study-units shall be indicated as F.
(3) Students who fail in any study unit may be allowed to be
re-assessed for that study unit once only. In such cases, the
maximum grade that may be awarded is grade D.
(4) In special circumstances, provided that due warning has
been given, the Board may recommend to Senate, on the advice of
the Board of Studies, that a student be not allowed to proceed with
the course, if, on the basis of reports given by the lecturers
involved, the Board is not satisfied that the student is making the
expected progress.
Award of 
Certificate.
8. (1) Students shall be awarded the Certificate if they obtain
a minimum of fifteen credits.
(2) The names of students who successfully complete the
course shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as
Passed.
