REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Bachelor of Arts
(Tourism Studies) - B.A. (Tourism Studies) - and Bachelor of Arts
(Honours) (Tourism Studies) - B.A. (Hons) (Tourism Studies) -
Degree Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Economics,
Management and Accountancy;
"the course" means the course of studies leading to the degree of
Bachelor of Arts (Tourism Studies) - B.A. (Tourism Studies) - or
the course of studies leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts
(Honours) (Tourism Studies) - B.A. (Hons) (Tourism Studies); and
"the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Tourism
Studies) - B.A. (Tourism Studies) - or the Degree of Bachelor of
Arts (Honours) (Tourism Studies) - B.A. (Hons) (Tourism Studies)
- as the case may be.
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in October
2001 or later.
Eligibility for 
Degree.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Degree, students must:
( a ) be registered as regular students for the appropriate
course in terms of the Admission Regulations of the
University;
( b ) complete the course of studies, pass the examinations
and comply with the other requirements prescribed in
these regulations; and
( c ) comply with any other requirements prescribed in any
other relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the
University.
Registration.

Admission to the 
course.
5. (1) Applicants may register for the course if they satisfy
the general entry requirements as specified in the Admission
Regulations of the University.
(2) Applicants who are in possession of the Diploma in Hotel
Administration awarded by the Institute of Tourism Studies (Malta)
may be admitted to Year 3 of the course under those conditions as

the Board may impose, including obtaining credits for specific Part
I study-units, prior to being allowed to sit for the Part I
examination.
Course duration. 6. (1) The course of studies leading to the degree of B.A.
(Tourism Studies) shall extend over a period of three years or its
equivalent in part-time studies.
(2) The course of studies leading to the degree of B.A. (Hons)
(Tourism Studies) shall extend over a period of four years or its
equivalent in part-time studies.
Extension. 7. The Board may allow students to complete the course in an
additional year of studies. In special circumstances, Senate may
allow a further extension of one year, on the recommendation of the
Board.
Board of Studies. 8. There shall be a Board of Studies for the course appointed
in terms of the Boards of Studies General Regulations.
Course of studies.

9. (1) The course of studies leading to the degree of B.A.
(Hons) (Tourism Studies) shall be divided into two parts (Part I and
II) and shall consist of study-units to which a minimum of 96
credits are assigned.
(2) The study-units shall be distributed as follows:
( a ) 80 credits in the following areas of study, with a
minimum of 16 credits in each area:
Management and Marketing
Economics/Finance/Accountancy
Social and Environmental Studies
Applied Tourism Studies
( b ) 16 credits in the following areas of study:
Fieldwork / Research - 4 credits
Writing of a Dissertation of between 10,000 and
12,000 words - 4 credits, and
Optional Study-Units - 8 credits, 3 credits of which
may be extracurricular.
(3) A catalogue of the study-units offered throughout the
course, with the credits assigned to each and the order in which
they are to be taken, shall be approved by the Board and shall be
published before the start of each academic year.
(4) The catalogue shall also specify the core study-units and
any prerequisites. Some study-units are sequential and registration
for them may require the previous successful completion of other
specified study-units and/or other qualifications indicated in the
catalogue of study-units.
(5) Each completed study-unit shall be assessed and graded
from A to D, A being the highest grade and D the lowest grade.
Study-units that have not been successfully completed shall be
indicated by F (Fail).
(6) In each year of the course, students must register for a

number of study-units to which not less than twenty and not more
than thirty credits are assigned, provided that a student who has
been required to repeat a year of studies may be allowed by the
Board to register for that number of study-units as the Board deems
fit.
(7) The Board may exempt students from the requirement of
obtaining a credit for a particular study-unit if they have obtained
from the University, or from an institution recognised by the Senate
for the purpose, a qualification the study for which is, in the
opinion of the Board, equivalent in content and standard to that
required for the study-unit concerned and thus may be required to
obtain credits for those study-units which the Board may indicate to
ensure that they are able to follow the course with profit.
(8) The study-units taken in common with the Bachelor of
Commerce students shall be assessed according to the criteria
established for the Bachelor of Commerce course.
Part I of the course.

than 72 credits are assigned (24 credits per year). These may
include up to 6 optional study-units during this Part of the course.
(2) Students shall be deemed to have completed Part I of the
course if they obtain a minimum of 72 credits in Part I and pass in
all the papers of the Part I examination.
(3) Students who complete Part I of the course in accordance
with subregulation (2) shall be eligible for the award of the B.A.
(Tourism Studies), unless they opt to proceed to Part II of the
course. Nevertheless, students who are admitted to the course in
accordance with regulation 5(2) shall not be entitled to the award of
the B.A. (Tourism Studies).
(4) Students who have obtained only 68 credits out of the
minimum 72 credits specified in subregulation (2) may be allowed
to proceed to Part II provided that they obtain the missing 4 credits
during Year 4 of the course. Failing this, the students shall not be
allowed to sit for the final examination or to qualify for the award
of the B.A. (Tourism Studies) degree.
Part I examination.

(2) Students shall be eligible for the award of the degree of
Bachelor of Arts (Tourism Studies) if they satisfy the requirements
laid down in regulation 9(2).
(3) There shall be two sessions of the Part I examination in
each year: one session is normally held in May/June and a
supplementary session is normally held in September.
(4) Students shall be deemed to have passed the Part I
examination if they have obtained one of the following grades: A,
B, C, or D in each of the papers.
(5) The names of students who fulfil the requirements for
proceeding to Part II of the course in accordance with regulation

13(2) shall be published in a list showing the grades obtained in the
five papers of the Part I examination.
Supplementary 
Part I examination 
and repetition of 
course.
12. (1) Students who fail in not more than two papers of the
Part I examination may be allowed to sit for the September session
supplementary examination in the papers failed. The maximum
grade that may be awarded in a supplementary session is Grade D.
(2) Students who fail in more than two papers of the Part I
examination or who fail in the supplementary examination may be
allowed to repeat the Part I examination once only, except in
extraordinary circumstances and with the special permission of the
Senate and under those conditions that the Board may impose.
Part II of the 
course.
13. (1) Part II shall comprise the fourth year of the course and
shall consist of study-units to which not less than 24 credits are
assigned, which may include up to 4 optional study-units, and a
dissertation.
(2) Students shall be eligible to register for Part II of the
course if they complete Part I of the course in accordance with
regulation 10(2) and obtain an overall Grade C average in the five
papers of the Part I examination.
(3) Students who opt to proceed to Part II of the course in
accordance with the provisions of subregulation (2) shall not be
entitled to the award of the B.A. (Tourism Studies) degree unless
they fail to qualify for the award of the B.A. (Hons) (Tourism
Studies) degree at the end of the fourth year of the course in
accordance with these regulations.
Eligibility for final 
examination.
14. (1) Students shall become eligible to sit for the final
examination if they have obtained a minimum of 24 credits in Part
II of the course.
(2) Students who have obtained only 22 credits out of the
minimum 24 credits specified in subregulation (1) may be allowed
by the Board to sit for the final examination subject to such
provisions as are deemed necessary to ensure adequate
compensation for the aforesaid missing credits before being
awarded the degree.
Final examination. 15. (1) The final examination shall be held at the end of Part
II of the course and shall consist of five papers related to the study-
units covered in Year 4 of the course.
(2) Students shall qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Arts
(Honours) (Tourism Studies) if they obtain the credits for the
study-units indicated in regulation 9 and if they pass in the
dissertation and in the Part II final examination.
(3) There shall be two sessions of final examination in each
year: one session is normally held in May/June and a
supplementary session is normally held in September.
(4) Students shall be deemed to have passed the final
examination if they have obtained one of the following grades: A,
B, C, or D in each of the papers.

Supplementary 
examination and 
repetition of 
course.
16. (1) Students who fail in not more than two papers of the
final examination may be allowed to sit for the supplementary
examination in the following session in the papers failed. The
maximum grade that can be awarded in a supplementary session is
Grade D.
(2) Students who fail in more than two papers of the final
examination or who fail in the supplementary examination may be
allowed to repeat the final examination once only, except in
extraordinary circumstances and with the special permission of the
Senate and under those conditions that the Board may impose.
Final grading.
Bachelor of Arts (Tourism Studies) and Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
(Tourism Studies) shall take into account their performance in the
examinations which shall account for 70% of the weighting, as well
as the grades obtained for the study-units which shall account for
the other 30%.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
degree of Bachelor of Arts (Tourism Studies) shall be published in
a list in alphabetical order divided in the following classification:
Category I
Category IIA
Category IIB
Category III.
(3) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (Tourism Studies) shall be
published in a list in alphabetical order divided in the following
classification:
First Class (Honours)
Second Class (Honours) Upper Division
Second Class (Honours) Lower Division
Third Class (Honours).
