BYE-LAWS FOR THE DIPLOMA
IN GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING

Citation.
in Guidance and Counselling.
Admission 
requirements.
1.1 A candidate shall be admitted to the course for the Diploma
in Guidance and Counselling if he is in possession of a locally
recognised teaching qualification together with five years teaching
experience.
1.2 Preference shall be given to qualified teachers who at the
time of application are formally engaged in guidance work.
Course 
programme.
2.1 The course programme shall consist of a minimum of thirty
study-units in the following course components:
2.2 The course, which is spread over two years of part-time
study, is divided in two parts of one year’s duration each.
2.3 A candidate must complete the course in not less than two
years and not more than three years, except with Senate’s
permission given for special reasons on the advice of the Faculty
Board.
Assessment.
assessment criteria of the course if he:
( a ) completes successfully Parts One and Two of the
course;
( b ) is successful in the Final Examination;
( c ) completes successfully the Long Essay or the Project.
3.2 A candidate shall be required to complete successfully Part
One of the course before proceeding to Part Two.
3.3 A candidate completes successfully each part of the course,

if he obtains a minimum of eleven credits in that part.
3.4 The result obtained in each unit is given in one of the
following grades according to merit: for a successfully completed
unit A, B, C, D in descending order; F signifies a failure.
3.5 A candidate shall not be allowed to continue the course if
in any part of the course he fails to obtain a minimum of nine
credits.
3.6 A candidate who in either part of the course obtains a
minimum of nine credits but fails to obtain eleven credits, shall be
allowed to re-sit the failed study-units once within a period of
tweve months from the start of that part. Credits obtained following
a re-sit shall carry the minimum grade.
3.7 A candidate shall be required to obtain an aggregate
minimum pass-mark in the Final Examination which shall consist
of two synoptic examination papers. Candidates who fail the Final
Examination shall be allowed to re-sit the Final Examination once
within a period of twelve months from the end of the course. A
pass-mark will be the highest mark that can be awarded.
3.8 A candidate shall be required to submit successfully a
Long Essay of approximately eight thousand words, or a project
deemed to be of equivalent academic standard. A candidate who
fails the Long Essay/Project shall be allowed to re-submit it once
within a period of twelve months.
Certification. 4. On the successful completion of the course a candidate
shall be awarded the Diploma in Guidance and Counselling.
Applicability. 5. These Bye-Laws shall apply to courses starting in 1990 or
later.
