STATUTE I 14 - INSTITUTE OF AGRICULTURE

Citation.
Agriculture Statute.
Institute of 
Agriculture.
1. There is hereby established an Institute of Agriculture at
the University of Malta.
Aims of the 
Institute.
2. The aims of the Institute shall be:
( a ) to organise degree and diploma courses in agricultural
sciences;
( b ) to conduct research in agricultural sciences with
particular reference to the needs of Maltese
agriculture;
( c ) to assist in the development of national agricultural
plans and in the efficient use of local agricultural
resources;
( d ) to provide professional advisory and extension
services to the local farming community; and
( e ) to pioneer new, modern technologies in Maltese
agriculture.
Board.
be composed as follows:
Chairman: The Rector or his deputy;
Vice-Chairman: The Director of the Institute;
the Director of Agriculture unless otherwise a Board
member;
a representative of the Minister responsible for
Agriculture;
the co-ordinators for each programme of study;
three persons appointed by Senate for three years;
one person elected by and from the academic staff of
the Institute;
two persons elected by and from the students; and
additional members co-opted by the Board so long as
the total Board membership does not exceed eleven.
(2) The Board shall, in respect of the Institute, have the power
to:

( a ) propose regulations to Senate, and to make and revoke
bye-laws;
( b ) supervise the general direction of all academic
matters, including programmes of study courses,
qualifications for admission of students, examinations
and grades;
( c ) propose the institution, suspension and abolition of
academic and non-academic posts;
( d ) nominate the Boards of Examiners and co-ordinators
of programmes of study.
(3) The functions of the Board shall be the following:
( a ) to determine the policy of the Institute with regard to
the aims stated above;
( b ) to oversee the financial administration of the Institute;
and
( c ) to ensure collaboration with other local and foreign
bodies necessary for achieving the aims of the
Institute.
Director and staff. 4. (1) The Institute shall have a Director and staff.
(2) The Director, appointed by the Council of the University,
following a call for applications, shall hold office for a period of
three years subject to re-appointment.
(3) The other academic members shall be appointed by the
Council of the University on the recommendation of the Board of
the Board of the Institute.
(4) The administrative and clerical staff may be appointed by
the Board of the Institute.
Treasurer of the 
Institute.
5. The Finance Officer of the University shall be the
Treasurer of the Institute. The Director shall prepare the annual
budget of the Institute and submit it to the Board of the Institute for
approval. He shall also submit to the Council of the University a
financial statement and to Senate and Council an annual report on
the activities of the Institute.
Amendments. 6. Amendments to this statute may be proposed by the Board
of the Institute for approval of the Council of the University.
