HUMAN STUDIES - B.A. - DEGREE COURSE 
REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Bachelor of Arts in
Theology and Human Studies - B.A. - Degree Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Bachelor
of Arts in Theology and Human Studies - B.A.;
"the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Theology
and Human Studies - B.A.
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall be applicable to courses starting in
October 2001 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Degree.

3. In order to be eligible for the Degree, a candidate shall
have:
( a ) registered as a matriculated student in terms of the
Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) registered for and successfully completed the full
course of studies in accordance with these regulations;
( c ) passed the Syniptic Examinations of the course; and
( d ) satisfied all other requirements laid down in these
regulations and in any other relevant statutes and
regulations of the University.
Board of Studies 
and coordinator.
4. (1) A Board of Studies consisting of the Dean of the
Faculty and three other members shall be appointed by the Faculty
Board for a period of three years to manage and supervise the
course in accordance with these regulations. The Dean shall be the
Chairman of the Board of Studies.
(2) The Faculty Board shall appoint a course coordinator for a
period of three years from among the members of the Board of
Studies.
Duration of course.

(2) The Faculty Board may allow a student who, for good and
sufficient reason, cannot complete the course within three years to
extend it by another year.
(3) A student may not complete the course earlier than three or

later than four years from the date of admission to the course,
except in special circumstances with the permission of Senate.
Course of studies.

6. (1) To complete the course and to be eligible for the award
of the Degree, students shall obtain 90 credits as follows:
( a ) 36 credits for study-units in Theology and Religious
Studies;
( b ) 30 credits for study-units in an approved principal area
of study or 15 credits for study-units in each of two
approved secondary areas of study;
( c ) 10 credits for study-units in Philosophy, or if
Philosophy is chosen as an area of study under
paragraph ( b ), in another area of study approved by the
Faculty Board;
( d ) 8 credits for the four papers of the Synoptic
Examinations (2 credits for each paper); and
( e ) 6 credits for optional study-units.
(2) The approved areas of study shall be Philosophy, Theology
and any other area which the Faculty Board approves after
consulting the Department, Institute or Faculty concerned.
(3) On registration for the course a student shall be required to
register for the approved area or areas of study.
(4) The Faculty Board may limit the available options or
possible combination of areas of study which can be chosen as
approved areas of study.
(5) The Faculty Board may allow a student to change the
approved area or areas of study before beginning the second year of
the course, provided that this change is compatible with the
regulations.
(6) A catalogue of study-units with the credits assigned to each
shall be published before the start of each academic year.
(7) The Dean may exempt a student, on the recommendation of
the Head of the Department concerned, from the requirement of
obtaining a credit certificate for a particular unit if he has obtained
from the University, or an institution recognized by Senate for the
purpose, a substantially equivalent qualification. A student may not
be exempted for more than one-third of the whole course.

7. (1) Study-units shall be arranged in such a way that the
course can be completed in three years.
(2) In each year of the course, students shall be required to
register for a number of study-units for which a total of not less
than 22 and not more than 30 credits are assigned.
(3) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B. C, D and F, where F indicates
"Failed".
(4) A student who fails to obtain a credit for a study-unit shall
normally be allowed to take one resit only and, if necessary, follow
the study-unit again only once, in which case his assessment shall

be graded either as "D" or as "F".
(5) Students who obtain less than 18 credits in each of any two
years of the course shall not be allowed to continue the course or to
take the Synoptic Examinations, except in special circumstances
and with the approval of Senate.
Synoptic 
Examinations.

8. (1) Students shall be eligible to sit for the Synoptic
Examinations, which are held at the end of the third year of the
course, if:
( a ) by the end of the third year, they have registered for
and completed study-units to which a minimum of 82
credits are assigned and have obtained at least 76
credits; and
( b ) they participate in integrative seminars as required by
the Faculty Board.
(2) The Synoptic Examinations shall consist of two three-hour
papers in Theology and Philosophy, and two three-hour papers in
the approved area of study or one three-hour paper in each of the
two secondary areas of study. A  viva voce  examination may also be
held.
(3) Students must pass in each paper of the Synoptic
Examinations.
(4) Papers shall be marked according to the following grades
in descending order of merit: A, B, C, D and F, where F indicates
"Failed".
(5) A student who fails in any of the papers may resit the paper
or papers in which he has failed only once and within six months.
(6) In the resit the grade obtained shall be either "D" or "F".

9. (1) The final result shall take into account the grades
obtained in all the study-units taken and in the Synoptic
Examinations according to the following weighting:
study-units 50%
synoptic examinations 50%.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
Degree shall be published in alphabetical order according to the
following categories: I, IIA, IIB and III.
Award of the 
Degree.
10. On successful completion of the course candidates shall be
awarded the Degree.
