DIPLOMA IN ADULT EDUCATION COURSE 
REGULATIONS

Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is the Diploma in Adult
Education Course Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of Studies set up by regulation
5(1);
"the Diploma" means the Diploma in Adult Education;
"the course" means the course leading to the Diploma in Adult
Education.
Applicability.
1993 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Diploma.
3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, a candidate
shall:
( a ) be registered as a part-time student in the Faculty of
Education;
( b ) complete the appropriate studies (coursework,
practicum and project) in Adult Education;
( c ) pass all prescribed examinations; and
( d ) satisfy all the other requirements laid down in these
regulations.
Registration.
Faculty of Education on the prescribed form within the time
specified by the Office of the Registrar.
(2) A candidate may be registered for the course if he is
eligible for admission to the University as a regular student in
terms of the Admission Regulations of the University.
(3) Applicants shall attend an interview conducted by. the
Board for the purposes of assessment of the required aptitudes and
background in conformity with the Admission Regulations.
Board of Studies.
entrusted to a Board of Studies appointed by the Board of the
Faculty of Education with the approval of Senate and consisting of
a Chairman, a Co-ordinator and two members.
(2) The Co-ordinator shall be responsible for the drawing up of
syllabi and of course-lists, as well as for the preparation (or
provisions for the availability) of support material, with the

cooperation and approval of the Board.
Course of studies. 6. The course of studies for the Diploma shall be of two years
duration and shall consist of:
( a ) study-units for which 20 credits shall be assigned;
( b ) a project for which 5 credits shall be assigned;
( c ) a practicum for which 5 credits shall be assigned; and
( d ) a final examination.
Assessment. 7. (1) A candidate shall be considered to have satisfied the
assessment criteria of the course if he:
( a ) completes successfully Part One and Part Two of the
course;
( b ) is successful in the practicum;
( c ) is successful in the final examination; and
( d ) completes successfully the project.
(2) Part One consists of fifteen credits which constitute the
work covered during the first year. Candidates who do not
successfully complete Part One shall not be allowed to proceed to
Part Two.
(3) In each semester of the course candidates shall be tested in
the study units covered during that semester in accordance with the
criteria established by the Board.
(4) The following grades shall be used in the assignment of
credits: A, B, C, D and F, in descending order of merit, with F
indicating failure.
(5) A candidate who fails in any study-unit may be allowed to
re-take the test or to repeat the entire study-unit once. In such
cases, the maximum grade the candidate can obtain shall be D.
Project. 8. Each candidate shall be required to submit a project
focusing on a particular aspect of adult education. He may plan and
develop a short pilot adult education project in a particular locality.
Long essays shall not be less than 8,000 words and shall not exceed
10,000. In each case, the project is to be discussed by the candidate
with a course tutor, and be approved by the Co-ordinator. The
project shall be submitted for appraisal two calendar months prior
to the end of the written part of the Final Examination.
Final examination. 9. (1) The final examination shall consist of two parts: ( a ) a
practicum and ( b ) four written papers.
(2) Candidates shall be attached to a Maltese adult education
agency, recognised by the Board, for a period of five weeks during
which they shall engage in adult educational work. They shall,
throughout these weeks, be assisted as well as evaluated by an
appointed tutor.
(3) At the end of the course, candidates shall take a
comprehensive written examination. Only those candidates who
have obtained 20 credits and successfully completed the practicum
will be admitted to the examinations. Candidates who fail in not
more than two of the four written papers shall be allowed one resit

within three months. The grade to be awarded in any resit shall be
either a D or an F. A candidate who has not successfully completed
the practicum may be allowed a further opportunity to do so within
two months.
Final grading.

(2) The names of candidates who qualify for the Diploma shall
be published in alphabetical order in the categories:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
(3) Candidates shall not be awarded the Diploma unless they
obtain a Pass in each part of the course of studies (that is the tests,
the project, the practicum and the final examination).
