CONDUCT AT EXAMINATIONS REGULATIONS

2. These regulations shall apply from May 1995 onwards.
REGULATIONS GOVERNING CONDUCT
AT EXAMINATIONS
1. A student shall not during any examination:
(i) introduce or cause to be introduced into the place of
examinations, any books, notes or any other printed or
written matter or any other form of recorded matter,
any blank paper or any blank recording material other
than those which the examiners have specified may be
taken into that particular examination;
(ii) introduce into the place of examination any electronic
device for mathematical calculations or any electronic
data processor unless expressly permitted by this
Examining Board in a particular examination;
(iii) directly or indirectly give or seek to give assistance to,
or seek to obtain or accept assistance from, any other
student;
(iv) by any other improper means whatever obtain or seek
to obtain advantage in the examination, or give or
endeavour to give assistance to other candidates such
as by having or seeking access to unauthorised
information or material or by copying or attempting to
copy from, or by communicating or attempting to
communicate with any other person during the time
appointed for an examination;
(v) when an index number is used, write his name on any
part of his examination book or make any other mark
thereon calculated to disclose his identity to an
examiner; 
(vi) act in any way as to disturb other students taking an
examination, in which case the Registrar may order the
student to leave the premises where the examination is
being held;
(vii) enter or leave the examination room without the
permission of the examination invigilator given in
terms of regulation 2 or 3 below;
(viii) engage in plagiarism - defined as the unacknowledged

use, as one’s own, of work of another person, whether
or not such work has been published.
2. No student may be allowed into an examination room after
the first half an hour of the examination or leave the examination
room whether temporarily or permanently, during the first half an
hour and during the last quarter of an hour of an examination.
3. A student may be allowed to leave the examination room
temporarily after half an hour from the start of an examination and
before the last quarter of an hour of an examination provided he is
duly supervised during his temporary absence.
4. When a student is alleged to have committed a breach of
any of the provisions in regulation 1 above, a complaint shall be
made in writing to the Rector, and such complaints shall be referred
to the Examinations Disciplinary Board appointed by Senate.
5. The Examinations Disciplinary Board shall be composed
of:
the Rector or his delegate as Chairman
the Registrar as Vice-Chairman
an academic member appointed by Senate
the Dean of the Faculty or Director of Institute in
which student against whom a complaint is made, is
following a course
a student appointed from among the students’
representatives on Senate.

6. The Disciplinary Board shall have the power to:
( a ) summon before it a student against whom a complaint
has been made in terms of regulation 1 above;
( b ) summon before it for the purpose of giving evidence at
any hearing, any student, or academic or non-academic
member of staff of the University;
( c ) reach a decision and impose one of the following
penalties:
(i) cancellation of any examination;
(ii) cancellation of all or a part of the examination
papers taken during the same sessions of
examinations;
(iii) suspension of the student’s academic or other
University privileges, benefits, rights and
facilities for a period not exceeding two months.
During the period of suspension the student shall
not be entitled to enter or remain on any
property or premises of the University;
(iv) the Board may recommend to Senate either a
suspension of up to an academic year or the
expulsion from the University.
7. A student accused of a breach of the provisions of
regulation 1 has the right to be heard and to bring any witnesses in

his defence:
Provided that if a student fails t o appear before the Board
without justification he will be deemed to have renounced the right
to be heard.
8. Decisions taken by the Disciplinary board shall have
immediate effect but all decisions taken are to be communicated to
Senate at its first meeting following the taking of any decision.
9. The Senate may, in special circumstances, review
decisions taken by the Disciplinary board.
