STATUTE I 21 - ACADEMY OF PHYSICAL 
EDUCATION AND SPORT STATUTE

Citation.
Physical Education and Sport Statute.
Applicability.
Academy of 
Physical Education 
and Sport.
3. There is hereby established an Academy of Physical
Education and Sport at the University of Malta.
Aims of the 
Academy.
4. The aims of the Academy shall be:
( a ) to organize certificate, diploma and degree courses in
Sports Sciences, Sports Medicine, Sports
Management, Sports Journalism and other related
areas in accordance with regulations approved by
Senate;
( b ) to conduct research with a focus on Physical Education
and Sports in general;
( c ) to organize conferences, seminars and other meetings
to study topics of interest to Physical Education and
Sport;
( d ) to develop national and international links with Sports
Institutions, such as the Malta Olympic Committee and
the University Sports Club, and Universities abroad,
especially those that specialise in studies related to
Physical Education and Sport;
( e ) to service the requirements of the Faculty of Education
and other faculties and institutions of the University in
Physical Education and Sport;
(f) to carry out all other acts ancillary or conducive to the
foregoing aims.
Board.
composed as follows:
Chairman - the Rector or his deputy;
Vice-Chairman - the Director of the Academy;
one member appointed by the Minister responsible for
Sport;
one member appointed by the Malta Council for Sport;
one member elected from and by the academic staff of
the Academy;
one member elected from and by the students of the

Academy;
one member appointed by the Council;
one member appointed by Senate;
one member appointed by the University Sports Club;
one member appointed by the Malta Olympic
Committee;
one member representing the University Sports
Complex Co. Ltd.;
two additional members who may be co-opted by the
Board.
Functions of the 
Board.
6. The functions of the Board shall be the following:
( a ) to determine the policy of the Academy with regard to
the achievement of the aims of the Academy;
( b ) to determine the proper financial administration of the
Academy; and
( c ) to collaborate with other bodies, local and foreign as
necessary, for the achievement of the aims of the
Academy.
Director and staff. 7. (1) The Academy shall have a Director and staff.
(2) The Director shall be appointed by the Council of the
University for a period of three years following a call for
applications, provided that the first Director of the Academy shall
be the present Director of Sport of the University.
(3) Academic staff shall be appointed by the Council in
accordance with Statute 7.
(4) The administrative and clerical staff may be appointed by
the Board, subject to the provisions of Statute I 00.
Treasurer of the 
Academy.
8. (1) The Finance Officer of the University shall be the
Treasurer of the Academy.
(2) The Director of the Academy shall prepare the annual
budget of the Academy and submit it to the Board for approval.
(3) The Director of the Academy shall also submit to the
Council a financial statement and to the Senate and Council an
annual report on the activities of the Academy.
Amendments. 9. Amendments to this Statute may be proposed by the Board
and shall require the approval of the Council.
