REGULATIONS
20th January, 1998
LEGAL NOTICE 12 of 1998, as amended by Legal Notices 19 and 72 of
2000, and 4 and 144 of 2001.
Citation and 
interpretation.
1. (1) The title of these regulations is Bachelor of
Engineering (Honours) - B.Eng. (Hons) - Degree Course
Regulations.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
"the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Engineering;
"the course" means the course leading to the Degree of Bachelor
of Engineering (Honours) - B.Eng. (Hons); and
"the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor of Engineering
(Honours) - B.Eng. (Hons).
Applicability.

2. These regulations shall be applicable to courses
commencing in October 2000 or later.
Eligibility for the 
Degree.
3. To be eligible for the Degree a student must -
( a ) be registered as a regular student in the Course in
terms of the Admission Regulations of the University;
( b ) complete the course of studies, qualify in the
examinations and satisfy any other requirements as
prescribed in these regulations; and
( c ) satisfy any other requirements prescribed in any other
relevant statutes and regulations of the University.

4. To be registered as a regular student in the course a
candidate must satisfy the general entry requirements specified in
the Admission Regulations of the University and,
( a ) have obtained a pass with Credit or Distinction in Pure
Mathematics and in Physics taken at Advanced Level
as part of the Matriculation Certificate Examination;
or
( b ) in terms of regulation 6.3 of the Admission
Regulations be in possession of:
(i) five passes in the Secondary Education
Certificate Examination including English
Language and, Maltese, and

(ii) a pass in Systems of Knowledge at Intermediate
Matriculation Level and,
(iii) either
a Higher Technician Diploma of the City and
Guilds of the London Institute Course No. 8000
in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, as
considered by the Board, and a pass at Advanced
Level in Physics at Grade C or better in the
Matriculation Certificate Examination of the
University or at a corresponding level of other
examinations recognisecl by Senate for the
purposes of the Admission Regulations;
or
a Higher Tcchnician Diploma of the City and
Guilds of the London Institute Course No. 8000
in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, as
considered by the Board, and a pass at Advanced
Level in Pure Mathematics at Grade C or better
in the Matriculation Certificate Examination of
the University or at a corresponding level of
other examinations recognised by Senate for the
purposes of the Admission Regulations;
or
the Diploma in Industrial Electronics, with
credit, of the Fellenberg Training Centre and a
pass at Advanced Level in Physics at Grade C or
better in the Matriculation Certificate
Examination of the University or at a
corresponding level of other examinations
recognised by Senate for the purposes of the
Admission Regulations;
or
( c ) if a candidate is a graduate of a University or has other
qualifications considered to be sufficient, he may be
exempted by the University Admissions Board, on the
advice of the Faculty Admissions Committee, from the
whole or part of these special course requirements.
Course structure.

5. (1) The course shall extend over a period of four years of
full-time.
(2) A student may not complete the course earlier than four
years or later than five years from first registration, except in
special circumstances with the permission of Senate, acting on the
advice of the Board.
(3) Each year of the course shall consist of two semesters of
study, and, except in the final year, shall be followed by a period of
eight weeks of industrial training as approved by the Board.
(4) The course shall consist. of study-units to which not less
than 120 credits are assigned in:
( a ) Fundamental Principles of Mechanical and Electrical
Engineering;

( b ) core and elective areas within the Mechanical and the
Electrical branches of Engineering;
( c ) an engineering project to which not less than eight
credits are assigned; and
( d ) optional study-units to which not more than eight
credits are assigned, chosen from study-units offered
by the Board or from study-units offered by other
entities of the University.
(5) In each year of the course, except in the fourth year,
students shall be required to register for study-units to which thirty
credits are assigned and must obtain not less than twenty-six credits
in order to be allowed to proceed to the next year, provided that
students shall not be allowed to proceed to the next year if, since
commencing the course, they have failed in study-units to which
more than five credits are assigned. Regulation 8(5) applies to the
fourth year of the course.
(6) The Board shall draw up a catalogue of study-units for
each year of the course. The catalogue shall indicate the credits
assigned to each study-unit and which study-units are compulsory.
The Board shall publish the catalogue prior to the commencement
of each academic year.
(7) The Board may exempt a student from the requirement of
obtaining a credit  he has obtained from the University, or an
institution recognised by Senate for the purpose, a qualification the
study for which is, in the opinion of the Board, at least equivalent
in content and standard to that required for the credit concerned.

6. (1) Year One of the course shall consist of study-units in
Fundamental Principles of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
and a period of industrial training as the Board may determine.
(2) At the beginning of the second semester of Year One,
students shall be requircd to choose the study programme for one of
the streams indicated in regulation 7(1).
Years Two, Three 
and Four of the 
course.

7. (1) In Year Two of the course students shall be required to
register for the study programme in one of the following streams:
( a ) Electrical Engineering;
( b ) Mechanical Engineering.
(2) The study programme for the Electrical Engineering stream
shall include study-units in the following areas of study:
( a ) Communications and Computer Engineering;
( b ) Electrical Power and Control Engineering;
( c ) Microelectronics.
(3) The study programme for the Mechanical Engineering
stream shall include study-units in the following areas of study:
( a ) Manufacturing Engineering;
( b ) Mechanical Engineering;
( c ) Metallurgy and Materials.

(4) During Year Four of the course students shall be required
to undertake an engineering project approved by the Board of
Studies, and shall submit the project and a written report thereon to
the Board of Examiners by not later than the end of May.

8. (1) Credits shall be assigned according to the following
grades in descending order of merit: A+, A, B +, B, C +, C, D +, D.
Failure shall be indicated by F. Incomplete work due to justifiable
reasons (illness, approved absence, etc.) shall be indicated by I. In
all other cases, the results of uncompleted study-units shall be
indicated as F. The grades shall take into account the students’
performance in coursework, written tests and examinations as
deemed appropriate by the Board.
(2) Students who fail in a study-unit shall be re-assessed once.
In the re-assessment the maximum grade that may be awarded shall
be grade D. Students who, during an academic year, fail in a
number of study-units to which more than eight credits are assigned
shall not be allowed re-assessments and shall be required to repeat
the year of studies, provided this is permitted in terms of regulation
5(2).
(3) Written examinations, on completion of each study-unit,
shall be held at either the January or the June session of
examinations.
(4) Supplementary written examinations are held only in
September.
(5) In Year Four of the course students must be successful in
all the study-units. The assessment of Year Four study-units may
include a  viva voce  examination.
(6) Students who fail to satisfy the requirements for successful
completion of any year of the course in terms of regulation 5(5) or
of subregulation (5) of this regulation shall be allowed to repeat the
study programme for the failed year, provided this is permitted by
the provisions of regulation 5(2).
(7) All results obtained during a failed year shall neither be
recorded nor taken into consideration for the award of the Degree.
(8) Students who are allowed to repeat a year shall be required
to repeat and be assessed again in all the study-units for that year.
In the first assessment of this year any grade may be obtained; in a
supplementary assessment, the maximum grade that may be
awarded shall be grade D. The credits obtained in this year shall
count towards the final classification of the Degree.
(9) To satisfy the examination requirements, students must be
successful in each component of the examination.
(10) Students who fail to satisfy the examiners in thc
engineering project may, at the discretion of the Board, be allowed
to re-submit the project by not later than the end of September of
that year. If successful, the maximum grade that can be awarded
shall be grade D. If unsuccessful, students shall be allowed to re-
submit it during a repeat the year, provided this is permitted in
terms of regulation 5(2).

Results and award 
of Degree.

9. (1) The Degree shall be awarded to students who:
( a ) have obtained not less than 115 credits throughout the
course;
( b ) have satisfied any other requirements prescribed in
these regulations; and
( c ) have satisfied any other requirements prescribed in
any other statutes and regulations of the University.
(2) The Degree shall be awarded in one of the following
classifications:
First Class Honours
Second Class Honours (Upper Division)
Second Class Honours (Lower Division)
Third Class Honours.
(3) There shall be a Degree Classification Board composed of
the Dean of the Faculty as Chairman, the examiners and the
external examiners, where appropriate.
(4) For the purpose of classifying successful students for the
award of the Degree in accordance with subregulation (2), the
Degree Classification Board shall assess the performance of
students during the four years of the course, taking into account the
grades obtained in all the 120 credits assigned to all the study-units
in the course.
(5) In execptional circumstances, a Pass Degree of Bachelor of
Engineering shall be awarded to a student who, in the opinion of
the Degrec Classilication Board, has satisfied the requirements for
each year of the course but has not achieved the appropriate level
of qualifications for the award of an Honours degree.
(6) The names of students who qualify for the award of the
Degree shall be published in alphabetical order in a list divided into
the classification categories listed in subregulations (2) and (6).
