SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES:

Dr. Stabile received her medical degree (L.R.C.P., M.R.C.S.) from the University of London (London, UK) in 1981 having previously completed her undergraduate training at the Royal University of Malta in 1978. She received her doctorate in reproductive medicine from the University of London (London, UK) and conducted research in the Academic Unit of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Reproductive Biochemistry) at The London Hospital Medical College and King's College Hospital School of Medicine (Diagnostic Sonography) from 1985 to 1988. Dr. Stabile was in active clinical practice in obstetrics and gynecology in the UK and completed her training leading to the MRCOG in 1989.

After emigrating to the U.S she was appointed Medical Director and Research Scientist at various Florida State University research centers and was responsible for generating over $10,000,000 in research funding from a variety of state and federal sources. Since 1995 she served as Medical and Evaluation Director of the federally funded Panhandle Healthy Start and Early Head Start Projects, which involve supervising and clinically advising home visitors in the management of over several hundred at risk pregnant women and their infants. She was also director of a Florida statewide program aimed at educating health professionals about the public health implications of exposure to environmental toxicants. She has lectured on numerous topics in her areas of interest, not only within Florida but also at the national and international level. Her teaching and research experience have led to invitations to serve as referee for major clinical journals in her field. Dr. Stabile is the author of over 60 publications in the peer-reviewed literature, including four books. Dr. Stabile has provided technical support and expert testimony to numerous legal firms in the US. Upon returning to Malta, Dr. Stabile has set up a busy private practice in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Her current areas of research interest include the underlying causes of racial and ethnic disparities in infant mortality, domestic violence, female reproduction and its complications, knowledge based systems and artificial intelligence techniques in medicine and problems of database systems used in medical informatics. She is also interested in public policy and systems change with respect to maternal and child health issues, and most especially perinatal health, infant mortality and women’s health. She is currently an active member of the board of directors of the International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research and Cybernetics and the Society for Applied Systems Research.

SUMMARY OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

Dr. Stabile has extensive experience in educating professional and paraprofessional audiences about women’s reproductive health issues, perinatal health, most especially infant mortality, and most recently focusing on the underlying causes and possible solutions to the issue of racial disparity in infant mortality (see list above).

Dr. Stabile is the director of a state wide program aimed at educating health professionals about the public health implications of exposure to environmental toxicants (see list below). She has lectured on clinical evaluation of suspected environmental and occupational illness, pediatric aspects of environmental health, toxicology and public health issues of environmental contamination.  In September 1992, she organized and taught a course on "Drugs, Chemicals and the Working Environment: Risk factors in Pregnancy" for Family Physicians working in London, U.K. She has also taught reproductive toxicology as part of a graduate program (Biological Sciences) at Florida State University.

Dr. Stabile also has extensive experience teaching clinical obstetrics and gynecology which begun during her fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology in London, UK and has continued in the US, both locally and nationally. While in the U.K. she was responsible for formal training of residents in obstetrics and gynaecology (M.R.C.O.G candidates), medical students, nurses, midwives and radiographers. She taught courses in various aspects of obstetrics and gynaecology including practical sonography.

In March 1993 she directed and taught a 15 hour long credit course aimed at family physicians entitled "Obstetrics and Gynecology for General Practitioners". This covered topics such as menstrual disorders, ultrasound update, complications of early pregnancy, modern management of infertility and essentials in fertility counseling. Three further 30 hour-long credit courses (four days) have been organized in London and Newcastle, UK since then, covering topics including acute and chronic pelvic pain, common management problems after the menopause, medical rituals in pregnancy, contraception in the 90's, ultrasound in family practice, management of miscarriage in the community, urogenital problems and high risk pregnancy. A fifth course was successfully organized in March 1996.

In April 1995 she taught several units on Pregnancy, Prenatal Care, Labor and Delivery, Post Partum Health, Infections, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS in Pregnancy to the Panhandle Healthy Start Project Home Visitor Training in Tallahassee, Florida. She currently teaches a graduate level course in diagnostics and therapeutics in the primary care setting to nurse practitioners at Florida State University.
