AbstractUniversal safety precautions are an essential part of the nurses work, since these precautions will protect them from contracting any blood or body fluid borne infections. Moreover, they even protect the patients from any cross infection. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the nurses awareness of these universal precautions. A descriptive, non-experimental research design was chosen in order to reach the aims and objectives of the study. The sample consists of 26 nurses, working in three orthopedic wards. A self-administered questionnaire, which was collected by hand, was employed to collect data. Twenty four nurses responded to the questionnaire. The data gathered revealed that the majority of nurses are aware of universal safety precautions. However, few nurses are aware of their benefits. In fact, some of the nurses do not use the same precautions for known infected patients and for other patients with no known infectious conditions. Moreover, compliance was not that good. Nonetheless, the majority of the nurses feel that by following universal precautions their risk of contracting infections will decrease. Most of the nurses have received information on universal precaution, even though some feel that this was not enough. In fact, the majority of nurses think that by updating their knowledge on universal safety precautions, they will comply with them more. Finally suggestions are made for improvement of this present situation and for further research.
