Is Pelvimetry Necessary ?

AbstractThis project attempts to evaluate the need for pelvimetry in current obstetrics and gynaecology, in St. Luke's Hospital, Malta. Data was collected retrospectively from archived patient records. The report concluded that it is impossible to obtain values for sensitivity, specificity and predictability of pelvimetry from a retrospective study. Pelvimetry may be a precise tool for measuring the maternal pelvis and comparison with US cephalometry does detect the presence of CPD. However the position of the fetus may change between the pelvimetry investigation and the time of delivery. Consequently, X-ray pelvimetry can determine the presence of CPD but cannot determine outcome of labour.
