Abstract | In Malta it is common practice that those patients who are diagnosed as having carotid stenosis of more than 70% on ultrasound are then investigated by carotid angiography. The latter is considered as the gold standard imaging modality in detecting such pathology (Y-haw, 1997). However, with the advent of new and more sophisticated imaging modalities, this is now debatable. This research study was designed to evaluate whether the results obtained by carotid doppler ultrasound examinations may be compared to carotid angiography examinations. The results obtained from this research revealed there was a 55% correlation. Although this is of statistical significance, this research concludes that carotid doppler ultrasound on its own is not a reliable imaging modality to account for carotid artery stenosis. |
