| Abstract | Ultrasound has a distinct role in the diagnosis of prostate carcinoma, a pathology which is caused when a number of cells of the prostate reproduce much quicker than the normal ones. The objective of this study was, to evaluate the role of transrectal ultrasound in the assessment of prostate carcinoma. The role of ultrasound in prostate examinations has radically increased in the past ten years. This is primarily related to the increasing incidence of prostate carcinoma. Two possible ultrasound approaches, are the Transabdominal and Transrectal approach. The major advantage Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) has over other imaging modalities is that one may perform a biopsy during the examination in its self. However, this alone is not enough when examining the prostate for carcinoma and should be used in conjunction with other clinical studies and imaging modalities. |
