| Abstract | This study explores the need to improve the paediatric radiography service in the local public sector. It explores the effectiveness of the current service and areas where improvement may be required. A cross-sectional study was carried out. This included parents of children, paediatricians (these are the main client groups) and radiographers (the principal service providers). Parents were asked to fill in a satisfaction questionnaire immediately after the imaging investigation. Another group of parents was interviewed about their expectations from such a service. Paediatricians were interviewed regarding their impressions of the current service and their suggestions for improvement. Radiographers were consulted in a focus group where a cross-section of the radiographer population stated their impressions and suggestions. All evidence gathered indicates that the present service requires improvement. The study showed a need for separate paediatric X-ray rooms and waiting areas which include play areas. Such paediatric areas should be colourful and attractive to children. There is a need for standardisation of protocols which should be followed by special training for dedicated, specialised paediatric radiographers and paediatric radiologists, according to the established protocols. |
