AbstractAn exploratory small-scale research design was chosen to explore the support that adolescents with diabetes receive and if they perceive it as helpful to manage their own care. To achieve the aim and objectives of this study, a semi-structured interview was conducted among 10 adolescents. Findings indicated that supportive behaviour was provided by family members, friends, teachers and healthcare professionals. Support was perceived as providing equipment, love, encouragement and information. Books, internet facilities and prayer were also perceived as being helpful. The findings of the study are discussed in more detail and several recommendations for practice and further research are made.
