Abstract | Osteoporosis is a bone disease which is directly associated with reduced bone mineral density resulting in brittle bones which are prone to fracture (Geddes & Grosset 2001). Hence it is essential that individuals are aware of the important factors which contribute to this condition so as to reduce the risk for potential fractures. The risk factors associated with osteoporosis include personal characteristics, lifestyles and pharmacological therapy (Poith 1998). This study will examine menopausal women's knowledge on osteoporosis with regards to risk factors and the prevention of related fractures. The target population is menopausal women who are attending the Bone Density Unit. Due to the limited time available a convenience sample of 20 subjects was chosen. Data collection was accomplished by means of a structured interview. Results showed that the group of women participating in the study had a certain amount of knowledge regarding osteoporosis. However knowledge was lacking in areas regarding hormones, the menopause, smoking, pharmacological treatment, alcohol consumption, body weight and exercise. Results showed that there is a need for more knowledge and better education regarding this condition. Thus, it is recommended that preventive educational programmes are implemented especially through the media. It would also be beneficial to introduce a National Screening Programme for osteoporosis so as to identify individuals at risk at an early stage in order for effective treatment to be carried out. |
