Abstract | This study was designed to explore the factors that nurses perceive as a hindrance to rehabilitation in a Long term Residence for the elderly. Therefore, this study may give a clue about why it may be difficult to practice rehabilitation in everyday care. A sample of 28 nurses was randomly selected from a list provided from the administration of the main governmental elderly residence - Saint Vincent de Paule Residence. The response rate was of 20 nurses. Data was collected with the use of a questionnaire formulated by the author herself. Findings revealed a clear similarity between the literature and the nurses' perceptions. In general, nurses felt that the most hindering factors are due to lack of health care professionals in the facility, environmental constraints and lack of motivation from the carers and the residents. In the first chapter of the dissertation, an introduction to the study was presented. A review of the current literature available on the subject was, described in the second chapter. The major factors which could hinder rehabilitation were identified from the same literature. In the third chapter,, the methodology for implementing this study was illustrated. The results were presented in the fourth chapter, with the use of tables, graphs and notes: Finally, the findings and their implications for nursing practice, management, and education were discussed. Recommendations were also put forward for consideration. |
