AbstractA small-scale study was designed to explore the information given to patients during the preoperative assessment of patients undergoing elective minor surgery under general anaesthesia. The convenience sample consisted of 10 Maltese individuals who attended the Surgical Out-patients Department of the local general hospital some time before their proposed operation, for the preoperative assessment. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected through tape-recorded face-to-face interviews. These interviews were later transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. The study revealed that all the participants received at least minimal preoperative information from health professionals before undergoing their minor surgery. However, the majority stated that they felt they needed more information. It must be stressed, that not all the information the respondents got was acquired during the preoperative assessment. It seems that at present, the preoperative assessment visit mostly comprises of a medical check up to ensure that the patient is fit to undergo the proposed surgery. These findings were used to draw up recommendations for practice and further research.
