Computing the Likelihood Term

Computing the likelihood term is difficult. However it can be estimated, because the most important factors predicting an insertion, deletion, transposition or substitution are simple local factors such as

• the identity of the correct letter,
• how the letter was misspelled
• the surrounding context
• e.g. m and n are often confused (because they are pronounced similarly, they often crop up in the same contexts.
