Saving Links Using Bookmarks

Very often we visit an object and for some reason wish to return to it later on. One way to do this is first remember the address, retype it in the location box, and then go to it. An easier way is to make use of the bookmarks facility.
  1. Click the bookmarks icon
  2. Select "Add Bookmark"
  3. Release
The link is now saved. To revisit it, repeat the above procedure but instead of selecting "Add Bookmark", select the saved link by scrolling down the list.

Editing Bookmarks

When your collection of bookmarks reaches a certain size, it becomes difficult to manage. Netscape Communicator provides facilites for organising collections of bookmarks into hierarchical directories. The main features are (a) editing bookmarks (b) creating new folders (c) moving bookmarks into folders.

To see the built-in directory structure carry out the following steps.

  1. Click the bookmark icon
  2. Select "edit bookmarks"
  3. Resize the window to suit your needs
  4. Near the top of the window find the title bar ("location", "name" etc.).
  5. Adjust the width of the columns to suit your needs by dragging the vertical field dividers to suit your needs.

To edit an individual bookmark

  1. Select the bookmark
  2. Go to the edit menu
  3. Select "bookmark properties"
  4. Edit to suit your needs
  5. Click "OK" or "cancel"

To create a new folder

  1. Go the file menu
  2. Select "new folder"
  3. Edit according to your taste
  4. Click "OK" or "cancel"
  5. If the folder is not where you want it, select it, drag to the desired location, and release.
Note that it is possible to put a folder "within" or "next to" another folder: it all depends on what structure you want to create.

To move a bookmark into a folder there are several possibilities. The easiest is to select the bookmark, drag it to the folder, and release. This isn't always easy or possible. In cases of difficulty:

  1. Select the bookmark
  2. Got to the edit menu and cut it
  3. Move the cursor to the desired desitination
  4. Go back to the edit menu and select "paste".

Filing Bookmarks

Once you have built a directory structure within which to keep your bookmarks, you can select the "File Bookmark" option from the bookmark icon. This enables you to drop the current bookmark into any of the bookmark directories.

Exercise on BookMarks

  1. Organise the bookmarks you created in the last exercise using the above techniques.
  2. Go the the resources page and start exploring.
  3. Create a directory of bookmarks that are useful for web authoring.
