My connection with the Science Museum project at the Junior College started in January 2000. The idea had been discussed for two years previous to this and a room had been allocated in the fourth floor where mostly Physics laboratory equipment that had no use in the laboratories was put.
The principal concern was the provision of funds. The work started with the identification of equipment, putting the items on a database, and their restoration to a working condition. More items were acquired from the science laboratories and treated in the same way. With more than 100 items ready for display, research was started on demonstrations that could be performed. A small amount of funding was negotiated in order to improve the room with curtains with a view of presenting optics demonstrations and of course for magic lantern projections.
The number of exhibits was increased to over 200 and arrangements were made during the year 2001 to bring second year students from the Junior College for demonstrations in addition to casual visitors. This was later expanded to students from the Technical Institute, secondary schools and also by some distinguished scientists and technologists. A website was started in 2002 and officially linked with the University website in 2003.
The latest development has been the participation in student projects including Systems of Knowledge and one by a B.Educ student whose thesis was specifically the role of a Science Museum in education.
The main difficulty of the Science Museum project is getting due recognition by the University. Since recognition by the administration is reflected in the salary scales and grades of the workers, it can be assumed that this is still low for the Science Museum, if it is expected that such a project be managed by a Laboratory Officer II and without other dedicated staff. This difficulty will have to be tackled in order to see some improvement.
In my last report on the Science Museum I mentioned that my three years could be considered as three separate phases, that is, the preparation of the exhibits, the visits and finally research work.
Due to the fact that the Junior College environment offers little scope for further advance in the Science Museum I have informed the authorities that unless I get their help the Science Museum will remain as it is with the possible loss of my services. I mentioned as an example the recent loss of two opportunities viz. the MCST presentation ceremony and the Science Week (Europe) where the failure to involve me sufficiently led to the events' lack of success.
There has been some further interest in donation of items to the Museum by individuals and official organisations. These have been referred to the Principal of the Junior College. There has also been an offer for me to examine some artifacts formerly belonging to the University and now in private hands. I have referred this to the Rector.
