My research interests encompass the broad area of Systems and Control Engineering, with specific emphasis on:

  • Adaptive and intelligent control systems
  • Computational Intelligence methodologies for control, modelling and signal processing
  • Nonlinear and stochastic control
  • Systems theory
  • Robotics and robot control systems
  • Biomedical applications of control and signal processing
I supervise several students in research projects and participate in externally and internally funded research programmes.

I am, or have previously been, involved in the following externally funded research projects:

ONGOING EXTERNALLY FUNDED PROJECTS:

  • R&I-2019-003-TA Smart User-Centred Product Service System for Evaluating and Developing Functional Hand Skills in Children with Cerebral Palsy (SMARTCLAP) in collaboration with the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering as lead
  • SCP-2022-007: A User-Experiences Based Approach for Designing Connected Speech and Language Therapeutic Toys in a Smart City (SALTT-CITY) in collaboration with the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering as lead
  • R&I-2019-003A: Conformity and Usability Risk Assessment for SMARTCLAP Commercialisation (CuraCLAPin collaboration with the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering as leadt User-Centred Product Service System for Evaluating and Developing Functional Hand Skills in Children with Cerebral Palsy

 PREVIOUS EXTERNALLY FUNDED PROJECTS:

  • RTDI-2004-026: Computational Intelligence Techniques for Control of Complex Systems
  • BIOPATTERN Network of Excellence
  • R&I-2008-026: Solar Hot Water Controller
  • Vigna Energetica: in collaboration with the Institute for Sustainable Energy as lead
  • R&I-2015-042-TDevelopment of a Novel Device to Support Children with Language Impairment in a Bilngual Context (Speechie) in collaboration with the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering as lead
  • R&I-2016-035TSmart Single Phase Motor Soft Starter without Starting Capacitor (HDMS) in collaboration with the Department of Industrial and Electrical Power Conversion as lead
  • R&I-2017-003TRider Centred Product + Service System for Designing Safer Motorcycles (RIDE+SAFE)  in collaboration with the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering as lead

In 2008-2011 I led an extensive project aimed at modernising the equipment infrastructure of the Control Systems Engineering Laboratory at the University of Malta. This project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund 2007-2013 under project code ERDF 082.
