I received the Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malta in 1989 and the MSc and PhD degrees in Control Systems Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 1995 and 2000. I was employed as a Test and Product Engineer with STMicroelectronics from March 1989 to December 1991 before joining the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta in January 1992, where I am currently Professor with the Department of Systems and Control Engineering. My teaching activities focus on Automatic Control and Systems Engineering.
Over the years I have taken several administrative roles at the University of Malta, including headship of the Department of Electrical Power and Control Engineering, the Department of Systems and Control Engineering, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and member of several University boards and committees. At present I am the university's Pro-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer.
My research interests and activities are on adaptive and intelligent control, neural networks, nonlinear and stochastic control, systems theory, bioengineering and robotics. I am a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Systems Science, co-author of the Springer book "Functional Adaptive Control: An intelligent systems approach" and author of numerous papers published in peer-reviewed international journals and conference proceedings. I am a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), holder of the Maltese Warrant to practise the profession of engineer and member of the Government Engineering Profession Board. Between 2010-17 I was the first Malta representative on the General Assembly of the European Control Association (EUCA). In 2017 I co-chaired the 25th Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation that was held in Valletta, Malta.
