Dr Duncan Camilleri

November 2001: B.Eng.(Hons.) in Mechanical Engineering, First Class Honours, University of Malta

August 2001 - November 2001: Design Engineering at Methode Electronics Malta Ltd; responsible for the design and optimisation of various automotive switches

November 2001 - September 2004: Research Assistant, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Strathclyde, U.K.; responsible for the design and commissioning of an automated welding rig capable of welding various assemblies and configurations while recording thermal transients and distortions during welding together with an automated 3D welding distortion scanner.

December 2004: PhD in Mechanical Engineering focusing on the Development of Support Tools for the Prediction of Distortion in the Design and Manufacturing of Thin Plate Welded Structures through numerical models that were validated via realistic experimental tests.

November 2004 - November 2007: Research Fellow, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Strathclyde, U.K.; Participation, co-investigator and principal investigator in various funded projects namely focusing on: Design by analysis methods of pressure vessels; Identification of different fabrication routes that minimize welding distortion through numerical and experimental testing and Development of a cryogenic cooling system applicable to welding processes. During these years followed Post Doctoral studies, delivered a set of lectures and supervised various students.

December 2007 - September 2009: Lecturer, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malta; Forming part of the Applied Mechanics research cluster, research was focused on computational and experimental mechanics, structural analysis of composite materials, vibration monitoring and modal analysis, prediction and mitigation of welding residual stresses and distortion, design and optimization of lightweight assemblies, and non-linear thermo-mechanical finite element analyses. Delivering lectures and supervision of students. Chairing and member of various boards.

November 2009 - March 2012: Senior Lecturer,  Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malta; Principal and co-investigator in various R&I research programmes looking at the structural optimisation of composite materials and structural integrity of various assemblies. Delivering lectures and supervision of students. Chairing and member of various boards.

March 2012 to date: Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malta; Participation in EU funded projects namely High Integrity Low Distortion Assembly (Hilda) project through the development of multiphysics models capable of predicting the shearing, thermal transients, residual stresses and welding distortion developed during friction stir welding. Coordination and delivering various study-unit lectures; supervision of undergraduate, post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral students; conducting Periodic Programme Review leading to the International Accreditation of the Mechanical Engineering course programme.
