 Prof. Paul Micallef has been on the academic staff of the University of Malta since 1979 and was Dean of the Faculty of Engineering between 1999-2003, Chairman of the Board of Studies for IT between 1997 - 2007. Chairman for the Institute of Energy Technology between 2002 - 2007, Head - Department of Communications and Computer Engineering between 1995-2004 and again between 2008-2011, and member of Senate between 1994-1996 and 1999-2003.

Prof. Micallef has participated in several European Projects. In the period 1987 - 1990 in conjunction with MedCampus he was involved in the organisation of several computer  summer schools. He participated in a Vth Framework INCOMED Project between 2000 - 2003 with the acronym CAHRISMA, and in a VIth Framework Project between 2004 - 2007 with the Acronym Twister.

He has been active in the local professional institutions, a member of the Government Appointed Engineering Board from 2001 to 2008, and a member of the Council of the Chamber of Engineers between 1999 - 2006. He has represented the Chamber of Engineers at the annual FEANI meeting between 2001 and 2008  and as a  Council Member of the Malta Standards Authority between 2006 - 2009.

Prof. Micallef has published several papers in the area of speech technology, and applications of signal processing to distance learning. His  current research covers the setting up of speech corpora suitable for speech recognition and speech synthesis for the Maltese language.His current interests are on-line speech recognition, multilingual speech synthesis and audio fingerprinting.

He is a Member of IEEE since 1975 and currently the Chair of IEEE Malta Section.
